Ashton Jeanty tends to hog the headlines, but if Hampton were in any other draft there might have been more spotlight to properly appreciate him. Hampton is either blue-chip or close to it in his own right, heading to Los Angeles as the 22nd overall pick after topping 1,500 rushing yards in back-to-back seasons for UNC. At 6-feet, 221 pounds, Hampton logged excellent athletic testing at the combine, running a 4.46-second 40-yard dash with strong jumps (38-inch vertical, 130-inch broad jump) to finalize a standout prospect profile. He averaged 23.4 carries and 3.2 catches per game in 2024, and more than 20 touches per game in 2023, boasting elite efficiency in both samples without missing any games. Hampton may eventually rank among the league leaders in touches, but he'll first need to compete with Najee Harris, who signed a one-year, $5.25 million contract with the Chargers this offseason. While not on Hampton's level as a pure runner, Harris offers an unusual combination of size, durability and passing-down competence, making him a threat to handle high-value touches even if/when the rookie takes over as the Chargers' lead back. Remains in walking boot
Hampton (ankle) remained in a walking boot following Thursday night's win over the Vikings, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
				ANALYSIS
Hampton has been on injured reserve since Week 5 and doesn't appear to be close to a return to action. At the time of his placement on injured reserve, it was reported that Hampton would likely miss more than the minimum four games. With Hampton, Najee Harris (Achilles) and Hassan Haskins (hamstring) out Thursday against Minnesota, Kimani Vidal had a career game with a 23-117-1 rushing line. He should continue operating as the Chargers' RB1 in the immediate future.

    Dons walking boot postgame
Hampton, who exited the Chargers' Week 5 loss to the Commanders in the fourth quarter due to a foot injury, was seen in a walking boot in the postgame locker room, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
				ANALYSIS
The rookie first-round pick was gaining some serious steam over the last two games, as he came into Week 5 having amassed 198 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries alongside an 11-96-0 receiving line over the previous two games. Hampton had put together another productive performance before his exit against Washington -- he rushed 12 times for 44 yards and recorded six receptions for 26 yards -- but his status for a Week 6 road matchup against the Dolphins is suddenly very much in question.
