White looked comfortable as Buffalo's third-string quarterback in 2024, settling into a rhythm behind Josh Allen and Mitchell Trubisky. He was only called on to attempt three passes across the course of the season, mostly handling an emergency role, but the Bills' decision to re-sign him signals confidence in his ability to contribute at practice and step up to the plate if needed. The Panthers signed White from their practice squad to their active roster Thursday, Darin Gantt of the team's official site reports.

White signed with Carolina's practice squad Oct. 21, and he could be needed to serve as Bryce Young's (ankle) backup Sunday versus Green Bay if Andy Dalton (thumb) can't suit up. White has 15 regular-season games (including seven starts) of NFL action under his belt across stints with the Jets, Dolphins and Bills. The Panthers made room for him on the roster by placing offensive lineman Brady Christensen (Achilles) on IR.

When White signed with the Dolphins last year, it looked like a good opportunity for a journeyman quarterback. After all, starter Tua Tagovailoa had yet to play more than 13 games in a season because of injuries. So what did Tua do? He started all 17 games for the Dolphins, relegating White to mop-up duty in a handful of games. The 6-5 White has a strong arm and the last two season was on target with 53.3 percent of his 15 attempts of 20-plus yards. But he’s not mobile, rushing 19 times for -1 yard in 14 career games. If Tua doesn’t stay as healthy this year, White would seemingly be in a good spot for passing stats with wideouts Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle in Mike McDaniel’s dynamic offense. Third-string Skylar Thompson is still around, but he didn’t see the field at all last season.
