                2025 Fantasy Outlook

The 14-year veteran overtook Bryce Young as the Panthers' starting quarterback early into the 2024 season, but Young's strong finish to last year suggests Dalton will return to a backup role in 2025. Dalton appeared in six games and made five starts last season, throwing for 989 yards, seven touchdowns and six interceptions while completing 66 percent of his passes. He likely won't carry much fantasy value heading into the upcoming campaign but could serve as a strong streaming option if Young were to miss time. ANALYSIS
Both of Carolina's top two quarterbacks are banged up, but Bryce Young seems to be in a better spot on the health front than Dalton, who told Steve Reed of the Associated Press that he's still able to throw the football despite nursing a broken thumb on his dominant hand. Though head coach Dave Canales labeled him day-to-day Wednesday, Young has turned in a pair of full practices to begin Week 9 prep, whereas Dalton has managed just one limited session. Canales said that he won't name a starting quarterback for Sunday's game at Green Bay until later in the week, but Young would seem to have the edge on the assignment over Dalton, who threw for just 175 yards in a blowout loss to Buffalo while filling in for an injured Young in Week 8. If Dalton's thumb injury is significant enough to make him unavailable even for backup duties this weekend, the Panthers would turn to the newly signed Mike White as their No. 2 quarterback.

Dalton returns to Carolina this season to back up and mentor second-year QB Bryce Young. Last season, Dalton started one game for an injured Young and passed for 361 yards -- more than Young totaled in any game -- and two touchdowns -- matched by Young just once last season. Like last year, Dalton won’t have much help if pressed into action again, though the Panthers acquired wideout Diontae Johnson this offseason and drafted Xavier Legette, who has 4.39 speed, in the first round. The hiring of head coach Dave Canales, the former Tampa Bay offensive coordinator who turned Baker Mayfield into a viable QB last season, should benefit whoever’s under center. If it’s Dalton, he’ll offer a steady veteran hand, but that might not be enough for a QB2 fantasy role, especially considering he lacks rushing upside.

    Might make multiple starts
Dalton is expected to get the start for the Panthers against the Bills in Week 8 and could make multiple starts after Bryce Young was diagnosed with a high-ankle sprain, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
