Being signed by Lions
Pacheco agreed to terms Tuesday on a contract with Detroit, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Pacheco fits in with the Lions as a complementary option alongside superstar running back Jahmyr Gibbs, replacing David Montgomery (traded to the Texans). In his first two seasons with the Chiefs the 2022 seventh-round pick seemed a legitimate breakout, averaging well over 4.0 YPC and leading the AFC powerhouse's backfield as a bruising between-the-tackles player. In part due to injuries, however, Pacheco has now logged back-to-back seasons with less than 500 rushing yards and averaging less than 4.0 YPC. Pacheco will be a candidate to rebound in Detroit, with opposing defenses primarily honing in on preventing Gibbs' big-play potential, though for fantasy purposes he's best considered in the category of sleeper or insurance option than as an RB2, as Montgomery once was with the Lions.

Pacheco is an explosive running back when healthy, but that acknowledgment has always been made with some amount of trepidation given his cartoonishly violent running style. His motor always visibly runs at 110 percent, which is helpful in some situations but not others. It's sometimes useful and always entertaining when Pacheco simply berserks his way through a collision, but it would be more efficient to do a better job setting up blocks and eluding tacklers, rather than purely relying on his unusual combination of power and straight-line speed. The fibula fracture Pacheco suffered Week 2 basically ended his 2024 season, because he was a shell of his former self when he returned after an 11-week absence, averaging 3.4 YPC on 62 carries in eight games between the end of the regular season and the playoffs. Kareem Hunt is not particularly close to Pacheco's level when both are at full strength, but even the largely expired journeyman was better than Pacheco down the stretch last season. A return to full strength this offseason could allow for the breakout that fantasy investors had hoped for in 2024, but it's also possible Pacheco missed out on his chance to be deployed as a workhorse and/or fails to regain his pre-injury explosiveness.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Aiming for Thanksgiving return
Pacheco is hoping to return to the lineup in Week 13 against the Cowboys, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Kansas City running back has been out since Week 8 with a knee issue. If Pacheco is able to return for a Thanksgiving trip to Dallas, however, he'd likely still be working behind Kareem Hunt. Hunt has gotten into the end zone in four straight games while amassing 247 scrimmage yards during Pacheco's three-game absence.
