2025 Fantasy Outlook
Gibbs' rookie season was already excellent and set him up for even higher expectations in 2024, yet it's safe to say Gibbs exceeded those expectations. He held up for all 17 weeks, including a three-game span in the fantasy playoffs when Gibbs took on a workhorse role while David Montgomery (knee) sat out. It's true that Gibbs wouldn't have had quite as many touches in 2024 if not for Montgomery's injury -- and in general the Lions prefer dividing touches between the two RBs -- but Gibbs was so dominant in Montgomery's absence that it may impact the workload split for 2025 under new offensive coordinator John Morton. As much as Gibbs' carry count might decline if Montgomery stays healthy, it's worth remembering that (A) Gibbs will likely always be among the league leaders in yards and touchdowns per carry, slightly offsetting any volume limitations, and (B) Gibbs showed a new level of pass-catching upside in 2024 and might push for 60-plus catches after logging 52 in both of his NFL seasons. RANKS
Backfield duo broken up
Gibbs is now the sole clear leader of Detroit's backfield, with the team having traded David Montgomery to the Texans on Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs has significantly outpaced Montgomery in back-to-back seasons despite the tandem sharing work out of the Lions backfield, but the 28-year-old veteran's departure ushers in a new era for the ground game in Detroit. Since joining the team as a first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Gibbs has consistently operated in a split backfield and manufactured dominant production via explosiveness, efficiency and pass-catching chops rather than overwhelming volume. It's worth noting that in 2025, Montgomery averaged five fewer touches per game while Gibbs managed to total 1,839 yards from scrimmage and 18 total touchdowns while handling a career-high 320 touches and suiting up for all 17 regular-season games. Nonetheless, it would be surprising if the Lions don't bring in another complementary backfield option in free agency or April's draft.

Gibbs' rookie season was impressive, and the scary thing is he doesn't even look like a finished product yet. More specifically, his pass-catching production almost certainly will improve in upcoming years. During Gibbs' rookie season, his rushing production unexpectedly stood out, including 5.2 YPC and 10 TDs on 182 carries. It now appears he's an even better runner than most projected last spring when the Lions shockingly selected him 12th overall to be the dual-threat complement to bruiser David Montgomery. If Gibbs is a better runner than expected and his receiving contributions eventually reach the levels expected all along, we could eventually be looking at a fantasy MVP sort of player, something like a smaller, faster Alvin Kamara. As the Lions showed in 2023, there's plenty of room for Gibbs and Montgomery to coexist, because the Detroit offense is built from the ground and piles up yardage and touchdowns behind an excellent offensive line. Just the same, Gibbs is one of the NFL's smaller running backs at 5-9, 200, and Montgomery is one of the league's best power runners, depriving Gibbs of massive workloads and consistent access to goal-line carries.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Extension candidate from Detroit
Gibbs is eligible for a contract extension this offseason, but he may have to wait until 2027 to get a new deal, Dan Graziano of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Detroit has a number of key players eligible for extensions, including tight end Sam LaPorta, linebacker Jack Campbell and safety Brian Branch. Gibbs and Campbell were both first-round picks, so the team can still pick up the fifth-year options on their contracts to keep them around through the 2027 campaign. Gibbs has been the centerpiece of the offense the last two campaigns, however, amassing 38 total touchdowns, 29 rushing and nine receiving, over 34 regular-season games. Locking him up early could make sense for the front office if the rest of the core gets signed quickly.
