Signs one-year contract
Petersen signed a one-year, $775,000 contract with the Wild on Wednesday, per Michael Russo of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Petersen had a 3.14 GAA and an .885 save percentage across 31 regular-season appearances with AHL Lehigh Valley in 2024-25. Although he signed a one-way contract, the 30-year-old still has a tough battle ahead of him for the backup role in Minnesota behind Filip Gustavsson. The 22-year-old Jesper Wallstedt will also be fighting for the No. 2 spot during training camp and is favored to win the job. If Petersen loses that battle, he will probably be the first goaltender summoned in the event of an injury, though Petersen would have to clear waivers before he can be sent to the minors.

Petersen was one of the worst goaltenders in the NHL a season ago, struggling mightily in 10 appearances for the Kings (5-3-2, 3.76 GAA, .868 save percentage) before being waived by LA in late November. With two years left on his deal at a cap hit of $5M annually, there was zero chance Petersen would be claimed. He was eventually traded to the Flyers in June in a salary dump. He seems likely to open the 2023-24 campaign as the backup to Carter Hart, although it wouldn't be the least bit surprising to see Philadelphia change course and hand the job to youngster Felix Sandstrom.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Flyers considering buyout
The Flyers are still considering whether or not to buy out the remainder of Petersen's contract, according to Kevin Kurz of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Petersen has one season remaining on a three-year contract signed with the Kings in September 2021. The netminder played only five games with the Flyers this season, going 2-2-0 with a 3.90 GAA and a poor .864 save percentage. His spot on the roster became more precarious when the Flyers inked Russian netminder Ivan Fedotov to a two-year contract in April. Petersen spent most of the season in the AHL, going 10-15-3 with a 2.71 GAA and a .902 save percentage with Lehigh Valley.
