Kaleb Johnson

22-Year-Old Running BackRB
Pittsburgh Steelers
2026 Fantasy Outlook
A third-round pick last year out of Iowa, Johnson failed to make much of a splash in a Steelers backfield that could have used one. He didn't see more than six carries in any of his 10 appearances, and his 2.5 yards per carry didn't make a compelling case for more work. The job that was supposed to be Johnson's as a between-the-tackles complement for Jaylen Warren instead got claimed by Kenneth Gainwell, and when Gainwell departed in free agency, Pittsburgh scooped up Rico Dowdle on a two-year deal to replace him. The patience and ability to gain yards after contact that Johnson showed in college weren't evident in the pros, and he wasn't trusted as a pass-catcher either. Mike McCarthy and his new coaching staff might look at Johnson with fresh eyes, but there's no clear path for him to have a significant role in 2026. Read Past Outlooks

Set to work behind top RB duo
RBPittsburgh Steelers
July 9, 2026
As the coming season approaches, Johnson is set to compete for depth slotting in a Pittsburgh backfield led by Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle, Brian Batko of the Steelers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson, whom the Steelers took in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, recorded just 28 carries for 69 yards and one catch for nine yards over 10 regular-season games as a rookie. With Warren and Dowdle clearly atop the team's RB depth chart in 2026, Johnson doesn't have a clear path to steady carries in his second year as a pro. Also in the backfield mix are Travis Homer, Lew Nichols and rookie seventh-rounder Eli Heidenreich, but in any case Johnson will be off the fantasy lineup radar as long as Warren and Dowdle are available.

2025 Fantasy Outlook
Although Iowa has featured many strong running backs over the years, Johnson's production stands out as a clear magnitude better than any of the Hawkeye RBs going back to Shonn Greene in 2008. By running for 1,537 yards and 21 touchdowns on 240 carries (6.4 YPC) in 2024, Johnson made a strong case to be selected on Day 2 of the draft (as Greene was in 2009). The Steelers bit, taking Johnson at No. 83 overall as a likely replacement for Najee Harris. At 6-foot-1, 224, Johnson is a big running back to be breaking so many long plays, and if he can offer a similar degree of big-play ability in the NFL then he'll be a standout fantasy back even without much receiving work. Johnson's combine performance was less than great, however -- a 4.57-second 40-yard dash suggests he's unlikely to break many long runs in the NFL -- so he might need to rebrand as a pure power runner alongside new teammate Jaylen Warren. The situation in Pittsburgh is favorable for Johnson to earn playing time early on, but he'll have to share work with Warren and won't necessarily take on all the snaps and touches that Harris handled the past few years.

Not a roster lock?
RBPittsburgh Steelers
July 5, 2026
Jack Markowski of SI.com predicts that Johnson will fail to make the Steelers' 53-man roster.
ANALYSIS
Markowski has the Steelers keeping Jaylen Warren, Rico Dowdle, Eli Heidenreich and Travis Homer at running back. Warren and Dowdle are expected to split carries on offense, while Heidenreich and Homer can both contribute on special teams and as pass catchers. Johnson hasn't shown much as a receiver or on special teams, and the 2025 third-round pick out of Iowa is coming off a forgettable rookie regular season during which he had just 69 rushing yards on 28 carries and one nine-yard catch on two targets.
