                2025 Fantasy Outlook

After bouncing around the league for years, McNichols found a stable home in 2024, taking 55 carries for 261 yards and four touchdowns for the Commanders. Now 29, he's back to compete for a depth role in a backfield that no longer has Brian Robinson, who was traded to San Francisco in August. The Commanders do have Austin Ekeler, Jacory Croskey-Merritt and Chris Rodriguez, however, giving McNichols plenty of competition for playing time and likely relegating him to a minimal role or the practice squad. McNichols rushed once for four yards and brought in five of six targets for 64 yards in the Commanders' 28-7 loss to the Chiefs on Monday night.
				ANALYSIS
The veteran running back was once again minimally involved on the ground, but he posted team-high and season-best reception and receiving yardage totals. McNichols also tied for the team lead in targets while setting a new season-long high-water mark in that category, and he projects to remain in a similar role irrespective of who's under center for the Commanders in a Week 9 home matchup against the Seahawks on Sunday night.

McNichols appeared destined to be mostly a special teams role player after three seasons as a professional. However, in 2020, he managed a career-high 271 offensive snaps which translated to 47 rushing attempts, 12 receptions and 259 total yards as Derrick Henry's primary backup. Heading into 2021, McNichols may find it difficult to maintain that role. The Titans invested a third-round pick in Darrynton Evans in the 2020 draft, though he was sidelined by various injuries for much of his rookie season. The team also added Brian Hill as a free agent in the offseason. Both moves will likely shift McNichols back to primarily a special teams role and without much fantasy upside in sight.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
    Could be team's passing-down back
McNichols could be Washington's top backfield option in passing situations moving forward, as Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Commanders believe Austin Ekeler suffered a torn Achilles during Thursday's loss to the Packers.
				ANALYSIS
Ekeler and Jacory Croskey-Merritt handled the majority of backfield opportunities throughout Washington's first two games, but McNichols notably mixed in for some change-of-pace work while Chris Rodriguez has been inactive. Croskey-Merritt has yet to catch a pass in the NFL and had only seven catches in college, so McNichols profiles as the favorite to take over as the top pass catcher in Washington's backfield if Ekeler's season-ending injury is confirmed.
