2026 Fantasy Outlook
After a QB4 finish in fantasy in 2024, Mayfield regressed massively last season, losing more than 800 passing yards and 15 TD passes to fall to QB12. First-time offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard eschewed the screen game of previous OC Liam Coen for downfield shots, which backfired when injuries began to pile up for Mayfield and the Buccaneers. In the first six games, Mayfield averaged 257 passing yards with 12 TDs and one interception. In the last 11 games, Mayfield averaged 196 yards with a 14/10 TD/INT as a biceps injury on his throwing arm, a shoulder injury on his other arm and knee and oblique injuries impacted his throwing. What’s more, Mike Evans missed nine games (and played 14 snaps in another) and Chris Godwin missed five midseason games. The Bucs replaced Grizzard this offseason with Zac Robinson, the former Falcons OC. Robinson had mixed results in Atlanta, but the hope is his background with the Rams’ Sean McVay, a la Coen, will pay off for Mayfield. Evans departed in free agency, however, leaving Godwin as the No. 1 WR, with Emeka Egbuka, who had an up-and-down rookie year, and Jalen McMillan, who missed most last season with an injury, next up. Bucky Irving is a good receiver out of the backfield, as is newcomer Kenneth Gainwell, but Replacing Evans is an issue. Health seems like the biggest factor, including with the offensive line, which was felled by injuries last season as well. Mayfield has top-10 fantasy potential, but he enters this season with some uncertainty. Read Past Outlooks

Looking for middle ground on deal
Mayfield reiterated Saturday to Steve McGehee of KWTV that he wants to remain in Tampa Bay on an extension, but the quarterback added that there is still work to be done to reach a middle ground in negotiations.
ANALYSIS
"I would love to be there," Mayfield said of Tampa Bay. "I think both sides want to get it done. Now it's a matter of finding that middle ground and what makes both sides happy." He previously said that he wants a new deal before training camp opens July 27. The two sides reportedly weren't close to a deal earlier in June, and Mayfield didn't provide an update on the progress, though he made it clear that he hopes to remain with the Buccaneers long-term.

Mayfield revived his career in 2023 and then took it to another level last season. He finished QB4 in fantasy with career highs in completion percentage (71.4), passing yards (4,500) and TD passes (41), all of which ranked in the top three in the league. He did it a little differently than the previous season, though. Whereas Mayfield pushed the ball downfield under former offensive coordinator Dave Canales, last season he capitalized on OC Liam Coen's quick-passing game that created the second-most yards after catch in the league (2,447). The rhythm attack fueled Mayfield to a career-high 77.5 on-target percentage, which increased his completion percentage by seven points. While his average target depth shrank by more than a yard and a half to 6.8 (32nd), his YPA shot up to 7.9 (7th). Coen left for Jacksonville, but pass-game coordinator Josh Grizzard was promoted to continue the gameplan. The Bucs return all of their offensive starters from last year, including WRs Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, although star left tackle Tristan Wirfs may miss the early part of the season after knee surgery in July. The team used its first-round pick on WR Emeka Egbuka, whose underneath/slot game seemingly fits well. Mayfield's TDs figure to drop, with his 37.2 percent red-zone TD rate (2nd) likely regressing closer to league average, but with a strong offensive line and running game keeping defenses off-balance, he's set up for another efficient season.

No progression in extension talks
Ryan Dunleavy of Yahoo Sports reports that Mayfield and the Buccaneers "remain far apart" on a contract extension for the veteran quarterback.
ANALYSIS
Mayfield's $33.3 million annual average salary ranks 16th among quarterbacks in the NFL, and the 2018 first-overall pick has been seeking a raise after leading the Buccaneers to the playoffs in two of his three years as a starter. He set a deadline of July 27 -- the start of Tampa Bay's training camp -- for an extension, and while the two sides are working on finding a "middle ground," it appears the chances of a new deal being struck dwindles with each passing day. Unless an extension is reached, Mayfield will enter the 2027 offseason as an unrestricted free agent.
