Gilman was on pace to surpass his career high in tackles before he suffered a hamstring injury in Week 12 that required a stint on injured reserve. A conventional hard-hitting thumper of a safety, Gilman is expected to be used to a similar extent while fellow safeties Elijah Molden and Derwin James will be used as flexible secondary pieces to aid a vulnerable group of corners. Acquired by Baltimore
The Ravens acquired Gilman and a 2026 fifth-round pick from the Chargers in exchange for Odafe Oweh and a 2027 seventh-round pick Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
				ANALYSIS
The 1-4 Ravens have been churning the roster on defense a bit Tuesday, first signing veteran C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the practice squad before acquiring Gilman from Los Angeles. Gilman was a sixth-round pick by the Chargers in 2020 and has appeared in 73 career regular-season games, making 39 starts. He's started 30 games over the last three seasons, including the first five of 2025 for Los Angeles. On 87 percent of the defensive snaps this season, Gilman has recorded 22 tackles (11 solo) and three pass breakups. With Kyle Hamilton nursing a groin injury, Gilman could start immediately alongside first-round rookie safety Malaki Starks.

Gilman parlayed a breakout 2023 campaign (73 tackles and two picks in 14 games) as the clear starting safety opposite Derwin James into a new two-year deal with the Chargers, reportedly worth $11 million. While James figures to be the linchpin for new head coach Jim Harbaugh's defensive scheme, Gilman's flexibility as a coverage safety will be valuable in its own right and offers some reliability to a secondary that waited until Day 3 of the NFL Draft to add any depth pieces.
