2025 Fantasy Outlook
The Nets had four first-round picks going into the 2025 NBA Draft, and they traded for a fifth, selecting Powell at No. 22 overall after a three-team deal with the Hawks and Celtics. He flashed elite 3-and-D potential during his lone season at North Carolina, and that'll likely have to be his calling card if he's going to crack the rotation as a rookie. Powell, along with fellow first-round picks Egor Denmin, Nolan Traore, Ben Saraf and Danny Wolf, will likely all see developmental minutes at some point during the 2025-26 campaign. However, beyond Cam Thomas, Michael Porter and Nic Claxton, the rest of Brooklyn's roster remains a mystery. Proven NBA role players like Terance Mann, Haywood Highsmith, Ziaire Williams, Jalen Wilson and Tyrese Martin will likely be ahead of Powell on the depth chart at first, but the Nets will have plenty of options to mix things up. Powell doesn't need to be drafted, especially in standard leagues, but he's worth keeping an eye on, especially if Brooklyn falls out of the playoff picture early. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Drake Powell is one of several one-and-done projects that will hope to get selected in the 2025 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-6 guard out of Pittsboro, NC, was ranked as a Top 15 player in the 2024 class and decided to stay in his hometown to play for the Tar Heels. Despite being a freshman, Powell didn't have problems handling a prominent role right away and ended up starting in 24 of his 37 appearances in his lone year with the program. The numbers weren't eye-popping, but there's no question Powell has tons of raw potential that could give him another level or two in his game. Powell averaged 7.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.7 steals and 0.7 blocks across 25.6 minutes per contest in his lone year with the program. Powell's offensive game is still developing. He has a knack for finishing through contact and plays with an aggressive motor, which combines well with his elite athleticism. He's also a connective playmaker. Powell can also get the job on defense due to his instincts and his athleticism, and his reads should improve as he gets more experience under his belt. As raw as he is, the potential is there. Powell is a potential first round selection in the 2025 NBA Draft. He has top-shelf athleticism and can be a solid two-way contributor for any team that takes a chance on him. He's drawn comparisons to players such as Patrick Williams, Isaac Okoro and Thabo Sefolosha, though a version of Okoro with more athleticism looks like a more realistic comparison.

Targeting preseason return
FLong Island Nets   G League (Nets)
September 23, 2025
Nets general manager Sean Marks said Powell, who is battling left knee tendinopathy, hasn't been cleared for 5-on-5 yet, according to Nets Daily.
ANALYSIS
"He's not playing five-on-five as it stands now. But the hope is that he'll be in camp and doing drills and so forth," Marks said. He didn't participate in open gym, then under those guides, but at the same time, you know, we have no issues with him being held out of camp and so forth. And we'll build him up through there, and he should be good to go for, hopefully, the preseason games." Powell's left knee sidelined him for the entire Summer League, but it sounds like the No. 22 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft is on track to be ready for Opening Night.
