                2025 Fantasy Outlook

Suarez was one of the stars of the early part of last season, recording a 1.75 ERA and 0.89 WHIP through his first 15 starts. He rode a bit of good luck, but his strikeout rate was up (26.8%), his walk rate was down (5.4%) and his ERA estimators (2.70 FIP, 2.84 xFIP) were excellent. But what looked like a breakout in Suarez's age-28 season was not to last. He slumped to a 6.17 ERA in 12 starts the rest of the way, struggling on either side of a one-month absence due to lower-back soreness. That ERA wasn't necessarily a fair reflection of his performance, but his 4.42 FIP and 3.93 xFIP down the stretch were a far cry from his early-season success as his K% (18.4) and BB% (8.1) took big steps back. Suarez's good stretch was longer than his bad stretch, resulting in year-end numbers which are stronger than we're used to seeing from him, but the late-season swoon pushes back against the idea that he's anything more than the groundball-heavy innings-eater he's been for years. Goes five strong in bulk relief
Suarez (1-0) spun five innings of one-run ball out of the bullpen to pick up the victory in Wednesday's 8-2 win over the Dodgers in Game 3 of the NLDS.
                  Analysis
Aaron Nola drew the start for the Phillies but was lifted after two scoreless frames in favor of Suarez. The left-hander served up a solo home run to the first batter he faced in Tommy Edman, but Suarez settled in after that, holding the Dodgers off the scoreboard on four hits and one walk while striking out five. It's unlikely Suarez will be available to pitch for the rest of the NLDS, but he'll either be part of the Phillies' rotation or continue to operate in a bulk-relief role should his team advance to the NLCS.

Suarez remained a perfectly serviceable mid-rotation option for the Phillies last season, though he did see his ERA jump over half a run from 3.65 to 4.18. His ERA estimators generally showed a more modest change, as a jump in strikeout rate from 19.5 percent to 22.0 percent helped offset a drop in groundball rate from 55.4 percent to 48.5 percent. A roughly average number of strikeouts and walks alongside a healthy diet of grounders has been the formula throughout Suarez's career, and there's little reason to doubt that will continue in 2024, health permitting. Elbow issues delayed his 2023 debut until mid-May and limited him to 22 starts, but he remained on the mound the rest of the way outside of a brief bout of hamstring soreness in late August. Suarez capped the year with his second consecutive excellent postseason, producing a 1.93 ERA across four starts. He's now a big-game pitcher and a locked-in starter for a contender, but his fantasy value is held back by the fact that his groundball-heavy profile leads to modest strikeout totals and an elevated WHIP (1.42 last season).
