Vasil couldn't break through as a starting pitcher the past couple seasons while working at Triple-A as a member of the Mets, most recently logging a 6.04 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 109:52 K:BB in 134 innings over 29 appearances for Triple-A Syracuse. The Phillies took him in the Rule 5 draft and then flipped him to the Rays for cash. Vasil will probably work as a lower-leverage reliever initially in the majors if he is not returned to the Mets. It will be worth tracking if the Rays can unlock something with the former prospect of note via a changed role and/or pitch mix. Will remain in bullpen next season
White Sox general manager Chris Getz said Wednesday that he expects Vasil to remain in the bullpen next season, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.
                  Analysis
Vasil was a starter throughout his time in the minors with the Mets before the White Sox plucked him in the Rule 5 Draft last offseason, so he'd be capable of getting stretched out. However, Getz and the White Sox like the versatility Vasil provides in the bullpen, with his ability to eat multiple innings and appear in high-leverage situations, depending on what is needed. Vasil has posted a 2.45 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 77:47 K:BB over 95.2 innings, picking up five wins, four saves and two holds along the way.

        2024 Fantasy Outlook

A 6-foot-5 righty with a bulldog mentality, Vasil gets the most of his four-pitch mix and logged 124 innings across Double-A and Triple-A. He had a sparkling 24.9 K-BB% and 0.84 WHIP in 10 starts at Double-A and then struggled with the automated balls and strikes system at Triple-A to the tune of a 13.2 K-BB% and 1.48 WHIP. His four-seamer sits at 93 mph and can touch as high as 97 mph, while his 86-mph slider is his lone true plus offering. He had a 21 percent swinging-strike rate on the pitch at Triple-A, and he also had some success with his average changeup. Vasil's curveball is a fringe-average pitch. Poised to make his big-league debut sometime this season, Vasil will benefit from spacious Citi Field. He projects as a No. 4 or No. 5 starter who eats innings, but Vasil could exceed that projection with improved command or if his changeup jumps a grade.
