Lawrence Butler

Lawrence Butler

25-Year-Old OutfielderOF
Sacramento Athletics
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Butler was incredibly productive during his first full season in 2024 with 22 homers, 18 steals and an .807 OPS in 125 contests, but he endured the dreaded sophomore slump last year with a .234/.306/.404 slash line. He still delivered solid stats with 21 home runs and 22 steals while playing in 152 games, but he battled knee issues throughout the season, which may have affected his performance, and saw his strikeout rate spike to 28.4 percent. The 25-year-old underwent surgery early in the offseason and is expected to be healthy for spring training, which should give him a strong chance of bouncing back in 2026. Assuming he's fully past the knee problems, Butler could be a 30-30 candidate in 2026. Even if he doesn't reach that level, his 2025 production provides a decent floor given his power and speed output. Read Past Outlooks

Drives homer in loss
OFSacramento Athletics
April 13, 2026
Butler went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Monday's loss against the Rangers.
Analysis
Butler accounted for his team's lone run with a solo homer in the eighth inning of a lopsided loss. It's been a disappointing start to the season offensively for the Athletics, including the 25-year-old outfielder, who owns a .575 OPS with three extra-base hits and six RBI through 15 appearances. Butler is looking to produce closer to his 2024 form, when he posted an .807 OPS in 125 games, rather than his .710 mark in 152 contests from 2025, and Monday's homer could serve as a potential spark to get on track.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
The Athletics' final season in Oakland was largely forgettable from an on-field standpoint, but Butler's emergence was a nice surprise. A three-homer game on the final day before the All-Star break sparked an incredible run in which the outfielder slashed .316/.361/.611 over a 60-game span, which included a second three-homer game Aug. 26. He launched 16 home runs during that stretch after totaling six long balls in his first 63 games of the season. While he's not a burner in terms of sprint speed, ranking only in the 58th percentile, he went a perfect 18-for-18 on steal attempts, which shows good instincts and the ability to read opposing pitchers. His strikeout rate was manageable at 23.9 percent and Butler, a lefty slugger, hit lefty pitching even better than he did righties. The walk rate could use some work, but the 24-year-old showed enough to safely project as the starting right fielder as the A's begin a new chapter in West Sacramento.
Drafted in the sixth round in 2018, Butler reached the majors last August at the age of 23. The success he enjoyed at Double-A and Triple-A did not immediately translate, as Butler struggled to a .582 OPS in 42 games with the A's after posting an .825 OPS across the top two levels of the minor leagues. He can punish a breaking ball left in the strike zone, but Butler may be overmatched against big-league velocity; he managed just two extra-base hits against 236 major-league fastballs last season. The x-factor here is his speed, which in theory helps boost his floor. He has reached 20 stolen bases twice in the minors. While he won't be handed anything out of camp, the lefty-hitting Butler figures to get a look in center field for an Oakland club with nothing to lose.

Talking extension
OFSacramento Athletics
February 19, 2025
Butler and the Athletics have engaged in conversations surrounding a long-term contract extension, Evan Drellich of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
There's no indication that the two sides are close to an agreement, but it's worth noting that there is mutual interest in keeping Butler in the organization. The 24-year-old outfielder improved significantly last season and became one of the Athletics' biggest offensive threats, slashing .262/.317/.490 with 22 home runs, 57 RBI and 18 stolen bases over 125 games.
