Jose Tena

25-Year-Old Third Baseman3B
Washington Nationals
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Tena cracked the Nationals' Opening Day roster for the 2025 season before being demoted to Triple-A in mid-June, though he had another short stint in the majors from late July to mid August. He posted a .669 OPS across 169 major-league plate appearances while logging three steals (in four attempts), 16 RBI, 19 runs and 13 doubles. Tena stole 21 bases in Triple-A and provides some fantasy value for his baserunning, but his ceiling will be naturally limited if he continues to sit against southpaws. Assuming he makes the Opening Day roster for 2026, Tena will likely serve in a bench role while seeing time at second and third base. Read Past Outlooks

Settling back into bench role
3BWashington Nationals
June 3, 2026
Tena is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Marlins.
Analysis
Tena will be on the bench for the second straight day following a stretch of five games in which he made four starts at designated hitter and went 1-for-13 with a walk and a run scored. The spike in playing time was tied to Dylan Crews missing out on a couple of starts due to a hand injury, but with Crews having since moved past that issue, Tena's opportunities could be more scarce moving forward.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
Acquired from Cleveland last year in the Lane Thomas deal, Tena got a look in Washington over the final two months, mostly at third base (35 games). He smacked a walk-off hit in his team debut Aug. 10 and finished with a respectable .274 average, three homers and six steals in seven attempts across 164 plate appearances for the Nationals. Tena has some speed and has reached double-digit homers in the minor leagues several times, but it will be tough for him to stick at the hot corner long term given the general offensive expectations at the position. Realistically, he may be best suited for a utility role, but as he enters his age-24 season in 2025, Tena appears tentatively set for an extended audition as a lineup regular between third base and second base.
Tena climbed three levels in 2023, culminating in his major league debut receiving 34 plate appearances and slashing .226/.294/.290 in 18 games played. Tena's bat played much better in both Double-A and Triple-A, combining for 35 extra base hits, eight of which were home runs, and 16 steals across the two levels of the minors. If the 22-year-old breaks camp with Cleveland, he should be viewed as a utility option at best with the capability of playing multiple infield roles, but no clear path to starting at any of them.
