When the Rays acquired Boyle, most everyone expected Kyle Snyder to change some things with Boyle in hopes of harnessing his raw stuff, which was being held back by terrible command. Snyder and staff did make some mechanical simplifications while also adding a splitter to serve as an offspeed pitch, and the first. year results were a mixed bag of success. Boyle had whiff rates of 25 percent or better on all three offerings and nearly doubled his K-BB% from the previous season. Yet, Boyle had one win in nine starts because he only garnered more than 15 outs in one outing. Three of his six homers all came in one start at Seattle, but there were also five starts with three or more walks including that forgettable Seattle game. Boyle struck out 172 batters with 69 walks in 138 innings of work between Durham and Tampa, and is now entrenched in the rotation as he looks to further his improvements with the Rays. The Rays placed Boyle on the 15-day injured list Saturday, retroactive to Friday, due to a right elbow strain.
Analysis
Boyle likely picked up the injury during Wednesday's start against the Cubs, when he took the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on four hits and three walks while striking out three across 4.1 innings. An MRI revealed a minor strain and some inflammation but no structural damage, and Rays manager Kevin Cash relayed to reporters Saturday that Boyle's placement on the 15-day IL is a "cautionary" move, per Ryan Bass of Rays.tv. Boyle is eligible to be activated off the IL in late April, though he'll undergo further tests to determine the severity of the injury and establish an estimated timeline to return. In a corresponding move, the Rays recalled right-hander Jesse Scholtens from Triple-A Durham.

The 8.3 percent walk rate Boyle tallied during a three-start audition with the Athletics in 2023, unsurprisingly, turned out to be a mirage. His walk rate in 2024 ballooned to 17.7 percent, which is actually better than his 18.8 percent mark from the minors. There's no disputing that Boyle's stuff pops. He averaged 97.7 mph with his four-seamer in 2024 and touched 100 mph with regularity. His slider can be devastating. Boyle is a two-pitch pitcher, though, and he's shown no ability at any level to find the strike zone enough for his plus stuff to matter. An offseason trade landed the righty in Tampa Bay, and if there's one team that might be able to squeeze the most out of Boyle, it's the Rays, who have essentially told their pitchers in recent years to just throw the ball down the middle and trust their stuff. Pitching coach Kyle Snyder also has a reputation for being able to get taller pitchers to refine their mechanics, him being 6-foot-8 himself (Boyle is 6-foot-7). It's a long shot that Boyle turns into anything, but he should at least be on fantasy radars.
