When you're in the Marlins organization and your dad's nickname is literally Mr. Marlin, there's plenty of pressure on you to reach the big leagues. Conine pulled it off in 2024 and settled in nicely as a regular over the final month of the season, collecting a .777 OPS while cranking three home runs in 89 trips to the plate. The 27-year-old probably has more raw power than his old man, but unfortunately he did not inherit his dad's contact skills. Conine struck out at a rate of 31.5 percent during his cup of coffee in Miami, and his 34.8 percent rate from the minors is even worse. The list of players with that level of swing and miss who are able to stick in the majors is short, so Conine is, in all likelihood, a Quad-A type player. However, the Marlins aren't exactly teeming with offensive options, so he could get a shot to defy the odds. Conine went 1-for-5 with a solo home run and a second run scored in Tuesday's 6-5 extra-innings win over the Phillies.
                  Analysis
Seeing his first game action since Apr. 19 due to shoulder surgery, Conine got the start in left field and batted eighth, and it was his long ball off David Robertson in the eighth inning that got the Marlins on the board and kicked off a rally from a 3-0 deficit. Conine will likely see consistent at-bats over the final week as Miami evaluates how he might fit into their 2026 roster plans, and through 76 plate appearances on the season the second-generation Marlin is slashing .275/.342/.464 with two homers, eight RBI and 12 runs.

Stat Review

How does Griffin Conine compare to other hitters?

This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.
* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

        2020 Fantasy Outlook

Conine began the year serving a 50-game suspension after testing positive for a banned stimulant. He made up for lost time, logging a .293 ISO and 169 wRC+ in 80 games at Low-A. His 22 home runs led all Midwest League hitters, but his 35.9 K% was the seventh-worst mark on the circuit among hitters with at least 200 PA, which is particularly troubling given his age (turns 23 in July). The left-handed slugger has 70-grade power and a plus arm for right field. When he connects, it is usually excellent contact (38.0 Hard%). He uses the whole field and gets the ball in the air (40.0 GB%). Conine also walked at a 10.9% clip, which is something he will have to continue to do as he climbs the ranks. The odds are stacked against him -- he would be risky if he logged that strikeout rate as a 22-year-old at Triple-A, let alone at Low-A.
