Gavin Williams

Gavin Williams

26-Year-Old PitcherSP
Cleveland Guardians
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Williams' ERA dropped significantly year over year from 4.86 to 3.06, which is good. His walk rate went from a poor 9.6 percent to an unacceptable 11.8 percent, which is bad. Williams' 83 walks were the most in baseball, which is the main reason why his ERA indicators like SIERA (4.35) painted a cloudier picture than his actual ERA. That's not to say there weren't positives to take away from the 26-year-old's performance in 2025. Williams stayed healthy for 31 starts after missing half of the previous year to injury, and he accumulated 173 strikeouts over 167.2 innings. He also excelled after the All-Star break (2.18 ERA, 78:26 K:BB in 70.1 frames) and in his lone postseason outing (six innings, zero earned runs, eight strikeouts). It's possible the strong finish is a sign of things to come from a 26-year-old who was once one of the top pitching prospects in all of baseball. However, it will be difficult to fully trust Williams until he shows he can throw strikes at even an average-ish level. Read Past Outlooks

April 13, 2026
Williams (2-1) earned the win over St. Louis on Monday, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four batters over five-plus innings.
Analysis
Williams was tagged for a run in the first inning but didn't allow another until serving up a leadoff homer to Jordan Walker in the sixth. Though he wasn't overly efficient, needing 93 pitches to complete five-plus frames, Williams pitched more than well enough to notch the win on a day when Cleveland gave him nine runs of support. The righty hurler began the campaign by giving up three runs over five innings in a loss, but since then Williams has surrendered just three earned runs across 17.2 frames spanning three starts. On the season, he has a 2.38 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 29:16 K:BB over 22.2 innings.

Stat Review
How does Gavin Williams compare to other starting pitchers?
This section compares his stats with all starting pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 120 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 120 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
Williams didn't make his season debut with the Guardians in July after working his way back from an elbow injury suffered during spring training. While the big right-hander never really got on a roll, he pitched better than his 4.86 ERA would suggest, as his 4.14 xERA, 4.19 SIERA and 3.67 FIP indicates. Williams' strikeout prowess in the minors (33.3 percent) has not yet carried over to the major-league level (23.6 percent), and his walk rate is hovering above 10 percent with the Guardians, as well. The 25-year-old seems to still be searching for the right pitch mix, as he introduced a cutter and used a curveball as his primary breaking ball in 2024 after a slider was his main breaking pitch in 2023. Williams' pedigree and the Guardians' pitching development track record points to the righty taking a step forward eventually, and perhaps as soon as 2025.
Williams opened the season in Double-A Akron but pushed his way into Cleveland's rotation by mid-June and remained there for the rest of the season. The apex of his season was consecutive double-digit strikeout games against Toronto and Tampa Bay in early August while the only true disastrous outing was one against the Dodgers later that month. The complaint with the rookie would be walks as he had four walks in five of his 16 outings but Williams also benefited from stranding runners in those outings as none of the five were terrible outings. We could also nitpick at him only going six or more innings in 5 of his 16 outings which made it tougher for him to net wins and quality starts. Cleveland has an excellent track record of pitching development and they'll no doubt continue to mold Williams into the front half of the rotation pitcher they envision him to be. That project just may not be completed in 2024.
Chasing college pitchers with big stuff and a non-premium first-year player draft price tag is a strong strategy in dynasty leagues, and Williams has thus far rewarded those who targeted him last offseason. A sturdy 6-foot-6 righty from East Carolina whom Cleveland selected with the 23rd overall pick in 2021, Williams has a power arsenal featuring an upper-90s fastball and three offspeed offerings that have above-average to plus potential. Williams registered a 1.96 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 149:40 K:BB in 115 innings across 25 starts in High-A and Double-A. He has SP1 or SP2 potential if he stays healthy and throws enough strikes. Cleveland's rotation will be tough to crack in the near future, but Williams could be the first of the Guardians' next big wave (also featuring Daniel Espino and Tanner Bibee) to debut.
