Rest-of-Season Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
After working as Kansas City's secondary catcher behind Salvador Perez the past few seasons, Fermin was traded to San Diego at the summer deadline and got a chance to work as the No. 1 option for his new club. He wasn't productive at the plate for either team and posted a combined .251/.297/.339 slash line with five home runs, 26 RBI and 32 runs in 109 games. Fermin showed some pop as a rookie in 2023 with nine long balls in 70 games, but he's hit just 11 in more than 700 plate appearances across the past two seasons and has a .091 ISO during that span. His career .264 average gives him at least one category of strength, but Fermin shouldn't be expected to provide much run production with nearly 80 percent of his hits being singles the last two years. Blasts another homer Monday
Fermin went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and an RBI single in Monday's 6-2 win over the Reds.
Analysis
Fermin opened the scoring, lofting an Andrew Abbott curveball over the left-field wall for a solo homer. After failing to go deep in his first 45 appearances of the season, Fermin has now homered in three consecutive games. The recent power surge is certainly encouraging, though the catcher's overall body of work remains underwhelming. Across 130 plate appearances, the 31-year-old is slashing .161/.250/.286 with eight extra-base hits, 11 RBI and 14 runs scored.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
Fermin had a mini-breakout in 2023 when he posted a .781 OPS with nine home runs in just 235 plate appearances. That led to more playing time in 2024, as he wasn't far behind Salvador Perez in starts at catcher (90 to 72) and added another 21 starts at designated hitter. Unfortunately, Fermin looked overexposed. His .271/.319/.366 batting line was still perfectly fine for a catcher, but his wRC+ dropped from 107 to 91, his xwOBA slipped from .333 to .279, his hard-hit rate went from 42.7 percent to 33.9 percent and his barrel rate dipped from 9.9 percent to 3.2 percent. Fermin is a good defensive catcher and should continue to get plenty of reps behind the dish on days Perez plays first base or serves as the DH. However, it's difficult to envision a competitive Royals club giving him ample time at DH again.
