2025 Fantasy Outlook
There was a time when Carlson was one of the top prospects in baseball. There likely wasn't a scenario where managers envisioned Carlson signing a one-year deal at age 26 after being dumped by his second organization, but Baltimore swooped in and gave him a six-figure guarantee after he was non-tendered by Tampa Bay at the deadline. The Rays acquired Carlson at the last second of the deadline and hoped there was some more magic dust in the cupboard that had been applied to Randy Arozarena and Tommy Pham when those two outfielders were acquired from St. Louis, but the canister must have had an expiration date, as Carlson did very little for the Rays. He hit all three of his homers for them and hit 20 points better after the trade, but his actual and expected batting average on non-off-speed pitches was below .200 and his swing-and-miss rate was at least 30 percent on all pitch types. The old adage that says, once you display a skill, you own it, applies here, because Carlson has nearly 1,750 plate appearances in his major league career, and outside of a hot second half of 2021 in which he hit 11 homers with a .277/.343/.505 slash line, he has done very little over the remaining 1,500 plate appearances on his resume. Back in majors
The Orioles recalled Carlson from Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday.
Analysis
The veteran outfielder was demoted over the weekend but will quickly return to the big leagues with Emmanuel Rivera getting designated for assignment. Carlson should serve as Baltimore's No. 4 outfielder, though he may not stick in the majors long since Tyler O'Neill (shoulder) is nearing his return from the injured list.

Just a few short years ago, Carlson was regarded as a promising, up-and-coming big leaguer, but his shine has taken a considerable hit on account of his .230/.316/.364 batting line over the past two seasons (743 plate appearances). He injured his left ankle in mid-May of last year and battled the ankle throughout the campaign before ultimately undergoing surgery in September. The outfielder was cleared for running and baseball activities in December, but he will still be brought along slowly in spring training. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol once considered Carlson his leadoff hitter of the future, and his optimism was justified after a 2021 season in which Carlson had 53 extra-base hits and a .343 OBP at the age of 22. Now 25, Carlson figures to bounce back with better luck on the health front, though he is not assured a regular role out of camp and may in fact open the year as the Cardinals' fourth outfielder.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Consistent starter in center field?
Carlson could see more starts in center field after the Orioles placed Cedric Mullins on the 10-day injured list Friday due to a right hamstring strain, per ESPN.com.
Analysis
The Orioles expect Colton Cowser to return from the 60-day injured list during their upcoming road trip in Seattle and Sacramento starting June 3. Even so, Baltimore has Mullins, Tyler O'Neill and Ramon Laureano all on the IL, so Carlson should have a good shot at meaningful playing time in the interim. Carlson has started in five straight games and has gone 7-for-20 with one steal, two home runs and six RBI over that span.
