2026 Fantasy Outlook
CES got the Opening Day start at first base for the Reds in 2025 and homered in his second game but quickly landed on the injured list with low-back inflammation. He returned with eight hits, including three homers, in his first four games back in June before slashing .179/.207/.250 over his subsequent 17 games to earn a ticket back to the minors. Encarnacion-Strand was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on July 12, never to be seen again at the major-league level. Manager Terry Francona told Mark Sheldon of MLB.com at the time of the demotion that "there was just way too much chase," and the first baseman continued to strike out roughly a quarter of the time during his time at Triple-A. The fact that Cincinnati didn't bring him back in September is telling. His power is significant, but the swing-and-miss tendencies create a real uphill battle over a sustained period. Now 26, Encarnacion-Strand is likely on the outside looking in for a roster spot out of spring training, and the clock is ticking on his 40-man status. Read Past Outlooks
Acquired by Baltimore
The Reds traded Encarnacion-Strand to the Orioles on Monday in exchange for cash considerations.
Analysis
Encarnacion-Strand failed to make the Reds' Opening Day roster and was DFA'd by the team this past Wednesday. He'll get a new opportunity with the Orioles, and while he's been assigned to Triple-A Norfolk, Encarnacion-Strand could see some major-league action at first base due to the absence of Ryan Mountcastle (foot). Across 10 games in Triple-A this season, Encarnacion-Strand has gone 8-for-36 (.222) with five runs scored, two homers and eight RBI.

2023
Encarnacion-Strand struggled to fill Joey Votto's shoes at first base in Cincinnati, slashing just .190/.220/.293 in 29 games before a fractured right wrist ended his season. When he first went down, Encarnacion-Strand was expected back in 4-to-6 weeks, but after receiving a second opinion, he opted for surgery. The Reds sent him to the Arizona Fall League for make-up at-bats, and those live reps should have given him some peace of mind and set him up for a relatively normal offseason heading into 2025. Part of the Reds' return for Tyler Mahle, Encarnacion-Strand still seems to be very much part of the organization's plans, though he won't be assured anything entering spring training. His power is off the charts, but he will likely struggle to find consistency until he refines his plate skills (28.5 K%, 3.3 BB% last season).

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Impressing during camp
Encarnacion-Strand is impressing early on in camp, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
It's a sample of just eight at-bats, but Encarnacion-Strand is hitting .625 in the Cactus League and is coming off a season in which he homered 32 times while registering a .955 OPS between the High-A and Double-A levels. Acquired by the Reds from the Twins in last year's deal for Tyler Mahle, Encarnacion-Strand is playing first base more often this spring, and the 23-year-old is also capable of handling third. He'll likely open the year in the minors, but he could be one of the first players called up by Cincinnati over the summer.
