2026 Fantasy Outlook
In the context of being the first pick of the 2018 draft, Mize has been somewhat disappointing to this point in his career. However, he's also settled in as a fairly steady mid-rotation option at the MLB level, and 2025 was one of his best campaigns to date. The righty posted a 3.87 ERA and 1.27 WHIP across 149 innings, and he set a new career high with 139 strikeouts. Mize also set a new career best with 14 wins after coming into the year with only nine career wins across his first four seasons. The 28-year-old may never reach true ace status, with his career 7.47 K/9 capping his upside, but Mize still has some fantasy appeal heading into 2026. He should remain one of Detroit's top starters behind Tarik Skubal, and Mize's solid if not spectacular 2025 campaign gives him something to build on. If he does manage to miss a few more bats, the righty could take a step forward as a fantasy asset, though even a repeat of last year would provide some value. Read Past Outlooks
Strong again in no-decision
Mize did not factor into the decision in Friday's 1-0 extra-inning loss to the Red Sox, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out seven over 6.2 scoreless innings.
Analysis
Mize went toe-to-toe with Ranger Suarez, generating 14 swinging strikes on 94 pitches to earn his second quality start of the season. The 28-year-old has now allowed one earned run or fewer in three of four starts, with the lone exception being a five-run clunker April 6. He'll carry a 2.78 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 25:7 K:BB across 22.2 innings into a home matchup against the Brewers next week.

2019
Mize has yet to fully live up to his potential as the first pick of the 2018 draft, and injuries have played a big role in slowing him down. The righty missed all of the 2023 campaign due to Tommy John surgery and again spent a chunk of the season on the injured list in 2024. This time around it was a hamstring strain that cost Mize about two months and limited him to 102.1 innings overall. That's actually the second-highest mark of Mize's career, behind the 150.1 innings he logged back in 2021. The 27-year-old has shown flashes of being a strong MLB starter, though he's yet to maintain it over long stretches of time, and he has a middling 4.36 ERA and 1.30 WHIP for his career, along with an uninspiring 6.99 K/9. The Tigers undoubtedly want to see Mize take the next step forward as a staff anchor alongside ace lefty Tarik Skubal, so the former should once again have a rotation spot heading into 2025. However, at some point Mize needs to turn his upside into actual production, and he's hard to trust in fantasy until that happens.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Candidate to be non-tendered
Mize could be non-tendered by the Tigers before Friday's roster deadline, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Analysis
The right-hander is entering his penultimate year of arbitration eligibility and is estimated to make $2 million in 2025, per Spotrac.com. Detroit already declined Mize's $3.1 club option, and it's unclear if the potential salary difference will be enough for the organization to justify tendering him a contract. He made 22 appearances during the 2024 regular season and had a 4.49 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 78:29 K:BB over 102.1 innings.
