                2025 Fantasy Outlook

Abreu led the league with a career-high 38 holds in 2024 and was one of five relief pitchers with 100-plus strikeouts on his ledger. The 27-year-old righty slightly improved his walk rate (9.8 percent), but lost some zip on his four-seam fastball, averaging 96.8 mph on the pitch compared to 97.6 mph the year prior. This was still well above average (88th percentile), but he generated fewer whiffs (28.3 percent) with the fastball while allowing seven home runs and a .500 SLG. Abreu only has nine career saves, but certainly has the skillset of a closer and would step into the role seamlessly for Houston if Josh Hader got hurt. For now, he's an elite setup man who still offers some fantasy value - especially in deeper formats - for those seeking strikeouts, holds or ratio support. Stops bleeding late, earns save
Abreu earned the save Tuesday against the Rangers, allowing one unearned run on three hits and a walk while striking out two over 1.1 innings.
                  Analysis
The right-hander was summoned in the eighth inning after Enyel De Los Santos nearly squandered a 6-1 lead. Abreu, who had allowed eight runs over his previous six appearances, looked to be in danger of another rough outing as he gave up an RBI single to Adolis Garcia following a walk to the first batter he faced. However, Abreu managed to settle down, escape further damage and finish off the ninth to secure his seventh save of the season. The performance not only helped seal a much-needed win for Houston but also provided a confidence boost for Abreu. He owns a 2.37 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 103:31 K:BB across 68.1 innings on the year.

Abreu passed up a few relievers in Houston's high-leverage hierarchy last season. Serving as the Astros' primary setup man in the eighth inning, Abreu established career highs across multiple categories in 2023, including games played (72), innings (72.0), saves (five) and holds (24). The 26-year-old posted elite ratios and was one of five relievers last season to record 100-plus strikeouts, hitting that mark right on the nose after throwing far more sliders (58.7% usage). The right-hander's upper-90s fastball was also more effective (.165 BA, 37.3% whiff), supplementing his slider as a secondary strikeout pitch. Abreu was looking like Houston's future closer, and he could still end up in the ninth, though he's been pushed back down the ladder for the time being with the addition of Josh Hader.
