Don't be discouraged by Pfaadt's bloated 4.71 ERA; all the estimators peg it at least a run better. He was victimized by a low 64.5 percent left on base mark. The righty improved his strikeout and walk rates last season while fixing the gopheritis plaguing him in his rookie year. Pfaadt adjusted his pitch mix, throwing more sinkers at the expense of four-seam fastballs. In 2023, his change-up generated a negative Fangraphs Pitch Value, but last year it rated as Pfaadt's second best offering, though he used it only 11.2 percent of the time. His sweeper sported the highest swinging strike rate of his repertoire. Pfaadt has demonstrated willingness to adjust, and it appears he has the arsenal to fine tune even more. Last season's high ERA could drop his acquisition cost. Buy the floor, and dream on further tweaks elevating Pfaadt to the next level. Hit hard in finale
Pfaadt (13-9) allowed eight runs (seven earned) on six hits and a hit-by-pitch and struck out five without walking a batter over four innings, taking the loss Sunday versus the Padres.
                  Analysis
Pfaadt's season finale was a microcosm of his season -- strong control, a few mistakes and a hearty dose of bad luck. He allowed four or more runs in four of his last seven starts of the season, winning just one of those games. Overall, he ended the year at a 5.25 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 147:37 K:BB across 176.2 innings across 33 starts.

    2024
				2023
Many will point to Pfaadt's postseason and ignore the regular season. While those five starts can't be ignored, Pfaadt foreshadowed his playoff success with a strong second half. After his first six outings, Pfaadt recorded an ugly 9.82 ERA and 1.87 WHIP, with only 21 strikeouts in 25.2 frames. His issue was a 3.2 HR/9 mark. Pfaadt was recalled after the All-Star break and posted a 4.22 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with 73 punchouts in 70.1 innings, with a still high but improved 1.7 HR/9. Pfaadt is a fly ball pitcher, so he'll continue to be homer-prone, but his BABIP should be below average, especially with strong defenders chasing down fly balls in the desert. However, Pfaadt threw fewer four-seamers and more sinkers in the postseason, with a 1.23 HR/9. If he carries this over to his sophomore season, Pfaadt could keep more balls in the yard. The concern in redraft leagues is someone may chase last season's postseason exploits. Expecting a full season of what Pfaadt did over the second half is the sage approach.

                  Analysis
Pfaadt won't be eligible for his first year of arbitration until 2027, so he could be targeted as a cost-controlled starter. The 26-year-old righty had a 4.71 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 185:42 K:BB over 181.2 innings during 2024, though teams could view him more favorably due to a 3.58 xFIP.
