Scores goal but struggles continue
Rielly scored a goal Thursday in a 5-3 loss to the Islanders.
ANALYSIS
Rielly has had a tough season, so he'll take this gimme goal -- he fired a pass to the crease that deflected off Matt Barzal's stick and through Ilya Sorokin's legs late in the the third. Rielly started the season reasonably well with 23 points (five goals, 18 assists) in his first 29 games, but he has just six goals and seven assists in 46 games since Dec. 13. Rielly's contract runs through 2029-30, but there's plenty of speculation in Toronto that the last three games of the season will be his last in blue and white. A change of scenery might improve his fantasy value, but it's hard to imagine he'll skate with a player much better than Auston Matthews.

For the second year in a row, Rielly's power-play time took a noticeable dip. In 2023-24, he was able to defy that reduction, but it caught up with him in 2024-25, where he had 41 points (14 on the power play) over 82 games, following his previous 58-point season. The Maple Leafs often used a five-forward power play last year, but changes in the team's composition could allow Rielly to get back in the mix for first-unit duties again in 2025-26. While his offense won't always be elite, Rielly offers decent upside with blocked shots, and his minus-8 rating was a product of more defensive usage rather than a drop in quality. He shouldn't be a No. 1 blueliner in fantasy, but he is reliable enough to be drafted in all formats.
