2025 Fantasy Outlook
Carlson's days of being a 70-point defenseman are likely done, but he wasn't negatively impacted by the Capitals' acquisition of Jakob Chychrun for 2024-25. Carlson had five goals, 46 assists, 14 power-play points, 131 blocked shots and a plus-17 rating for a club that exceeded expectations to be the top regular-season team in the Eastern Conference. Carlson is entering a contract year in 2025-26, and at 35 years old, his offense could start to diminish. However, 50-point blueliners don't grow on trees, and as long as he stays healthy, that's still within his range of possibilities as a top-four defenseman. The motivation of playing for a new deal should also help keep his offense steady even if the Capitals regress as a team. Read Past Outlooks
Stunning trade to Anaheim
Carlson (lower body) was traded to the Ducks from the Capitals on Thursday in exchange for a conditional first-round pick and a 2026 third-round pick.
ANALYSIS
Carlson had played his entire career with the Capitals since he was drafted 27th overall in 2008. He ranks fifth in franchise history with 771 points and is second in team history with 1,143 games played. This stunning trade will see Carlson head out west, where he'll provide valuable offense as well as veteran experience on a young Ducks team that also has Jacob Trouba and Radko Gudas on the right side of the blue line. Carlson's status is uncertain due to his injury, but once he's ready to play, he should be in a top-four role and on one of Anaheim's two power-play units. Carlson will be a free agent this summer.

Carlson surpassed the 50-point mark for the sixth time in his career in 2023-24, collecting 10 goals and 42 assists in 82 regular-season contests. He found the back of the net on only one occasion through 35 games before turning it on down the stretch to help the Capitals secure a playoff berth. Carlson wrapped up the regular season with nine tallies and 33 points in 47 outings. Despite some hiccups on the man advantage during the year, Carlson finished with a respectable 21 power-play points. He also earned 176 shots on goal, 194 blocked shots and 69 hits. The 34-year-old blueliner offers solid category coverage, and his offensive numbers should improve following Washington's retool in the summer.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Not likely to be traded
Carlson, who is dealing with a lower-body injury, isn't likely to be traded before Friday's deadline, but there also hasn't been any recent progress in his contract negotiations, per Emily Kaplan of ESPN on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Carlson has 10 goals and 46 points in 55 outings. He's missed the past four games due to a lower-body injury, but he's regarded as day-to-day, so that injury probably wouldn't hurt his trade value if Washington did decide to go that route. The 36-year-old defenseman is in the final season of his eight-year, $64 million contract. He has a 10-team no-trade list, which gives him some control over his destination if the Capitals did want to move him.
