Chatfield is a bottom-four defenseman who won't help fantasy managers much in most categories. He finished the 2024-25 regular season with seven goals, 18 points, a plus-22 rating, 54 PIM, 114 shots, 64 hits and 64 blocks. He will provide a solid plus-minus rating, given his role on the Hurricanes. However, the 29-year-old is likely to finish this season with fewer PIM after recording more than 35 in a season for the first time in 2024-25. Chatfield had to play without his usual partner Jaccob Slavin (lower body), and that could be the case throughout the Hurricanes' six-game road trip. Both defensemen were banged up during the preseason, but Chatfield has been healthy to begin the regular season. The 29-year-old is at one assist, two shots on net, two hits, three blocked shots, four PIM and a plus-2 rating over three appearances. He'll continue to play an important on-ice role for the Hurricanes, but his style doesn't translate well in fantasy.

Rather than test the market as an unrestricted free agent, he agreed to a three-year, $9 million contract extension with the Hurricanes in June. Chatfield has developed into a solid depth defender for the organization over the past two seasons. He will probably be back with Dmitry Orlov after they were used regularly together in 2023-24. The 28-year-old Chatfield could be a 25-point performer in the upcoming campaign, but he won't offer much help for fantasy managers in other categories.
