2025 Fantasy Outlook
Lyon had a 14-9-1 record, 2.81 GAA and .896 save percentage in 30 appearances with Detroit in 2024-25. While those numbers aren’t impressive, Detroit wasn’t a great team defensively, and Lyon’s plus-2.4 goals saved above expected suggests he held his own. With that work behind him, Lyon joined Buffalo over the summer on a two-year deal. It’s an interesting situation because Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen has shown promise, but he hasn’t done enough to gain a full lock on Buffalo’s starter role. Meanwhile, Devon Levi has failed to establish himself at the NHL level despite his substantial potential. There’s a path for Lyon to steal the No. 1 job for significant stretches, but it’s also possible he eventually finds himself as the No. 3 option. Pencil Lyon in for 20-30 games with mediocre results, but keep in the back of your mind that there’s plenty of room for variance. Read Past Outlooks

Gets little help in Game 3 loss
GBuffalo Sabres
May 11, 2026
Lyon stopped 31 of 36 shots in Sunday's 6-2 loss to the Canadiens in Game 3. Montreal's final goal was scored into an empty net.
ANALYSIS
The veteran netminder came up with some big saves, but defensive breakdowns by Buffalo once again led to plenty of open looks and second chances for Montreal. Lyon has now given up nine goals on 63 shots over the last two games, both losses, and while he isn't fully at fault for those results, head coach Lindy Ruff may have to consider a switch in the crease for Game 4 on Tuesday.

Lyon had a remarkable season for the Wings in 2023-24, becoming the starter after inking a deal to be the team's third stringer. With 39 previous NHL games on his resume, the journeyman played in 44 games last season, delivering a 21-18-5 record, 3.05 GAA and .904 save percentage. Lyon carried that momentum into the IIHF Worlds for Team USA, stopping 47 of 50 shots through two tournament games before suffering a finger injury. If he's healthy, Lyon will battle Ville Husso to back up newcomer Cam Talbot and get 25-plus starts in the role. Worst case, the Wings carry both Lyon and Husso into the season, and the game-splits all but eliminate any fantasy value for both men.
Between the regular season and the playoffs, Lyon went 10-6-2 with a 3.02 GAA and a .908 save percentage across 19 games with the Panthers last season. He was good enough to steal Sergei Bobrobsky's starting job at the end of the regular season, but Lyon couldn't keep the job past the middle of the first round of the playoffs. Nonetheless, he got on the Red Wings' radar, signing a two-year contract to help build Detroit's goalie depth. Lyon will compete with James Reimer for the backup job in training camp -- whoever wins that battle will have low-end fantasy appeal, while the other is likely ticketed for AHL Grand Rapids. Lyon is the underdog to win that battle.
Lyon had an 11-14-5 record with a 2.69 GAA and a .913 save percentage in 32 games with AHL Lehigh Valley last year, but that didn't translate to NHL success. With Carter Hart and Brian Elliott both under contract this year, Lyon's path to playing time will be crowded. Instead, the 28-year-old goalie is almost certainly destined for the Flyers' taxi squad, where he'll be an emergency depth option. Fantasy managers can pass on the Minnesota native in 2020-21, and it's unlikely at this point he'll ever be more than a backup in the NHL.
With numerous goaltending injuries during the second half of 2017-18, Lyon received his chance to start in the NHL. He began slowly, but in his last five appearances, he went 2-0-1 with a .912 save percentage. Overall, he finished 4-2-1 with a .905 save percentage and 2.75 GAA in 11 NHL games. The Flyers liked enough of what they saw to sign him to a two-year deal this summer. Petr Mrazek has departed for the Hurricanes, but Brian Elliott and Michal Neuvirth remain in the Flyers organization, so in all likelihood, Lyon will begin the season in the AHL, where he went 22-13-2 with a .924 save percentage and 2.50 GAA last year. If called upon, Lyon has to the potential to be a serviceable NHL goaltender in 2018-19 and could be used as a streaming option in fantasy circuits.
