2026 Fantasy Outlook
If not for how Scottie Scheffler closed the 2025 season, McIlroy would have been the obvious choice for Player of the Year. He came out of the gates firing winning the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, then winning THE PLAYERS Championship for a second time and then finally completing the Career Grand Slam with that long awaited first win at The Masters. Not only was his Masters win historic, but it was also his first major championship of any kind since the 2014 PGA Championship. McIlroy had so many close calls in those 11 years and an abundance of scar tissue. Now at age 36 and having accomplished basically everything one can in the game of golf, the hope is that he is freed up to continue to run up his PGA Tour and major championship win totals that sit at 29 and 5, respectively. What maybe doesn't get talked about enough is the fact that 2025 was the best putting season of McIlroy's career, and if that continues into 2026 he is going to be racking up top finishes. Jumps 19 spots into top-10
McIlroy fired a six-under 64 in the final round of the Genesis Scottish Open to finish tied with Michael Thorbjornsen for seventh.
ANALYSIS
What could have been for McIlroy, had it not been for his three-over 73 in the third round. Saturday's score dropped the Northern Irishman outside the top-20, but he came out hot Sunday with five birdies in his first seven holes. He went two-under the rest of the way to finish tied with Johnny Keefer for the best score of the final round. McIlroy shot four-under or better in three of his four rounds and most of his success came on the tee box. He led the field at The Renaissance Club in SG: Off-the-Tee, gaining 5.98 strokes in that category while also ranking second in driving distance, T8 in birdies, T10 in driving accuracy, 11th in both scrambling and SG: Around and 14th in SG: Putting. However, his iron play was not as strong, ranking 52nd out of 71 players in SG: Approach. McIlroy will be one of the favorites for next week's Open Championship, which he won in 2014 at Royal Liverpool. He finished T7 in last year's Open and T4 in 2017 at Royal Birkdale, which will serve host to this year's major. A win next week would mark the second time in McIlroy's career that he won two majors in the same year (2014 at The Open and PGA Championship).

It was a good year by any measure with win wins at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the Wells Fargo Championship in back-to-back starts, but it could have been a great year by McIlroy standards had a couple short putts gone in down the stretch at the U.S. Open. It's still a bit unfathomable that a player as great as McIlroy has not won a major since 2014, but here we are heading into 2025. The Northern Irishman was third in SG: Total in 2024 (+1.41), but significantly behind both Scottie Scheffler (+2.50) and Xander Schauffele (+1.94). You know he's going to be motivated to close that gap and prove why he still deserves to be the top player on the PGA Tour. To do that he will need to improve his iron play in which he ranked 55th in SG: Approach and 131st in GIR percentage, down from 8th and 79th in 2023, respectively.
