Smith joined San Jose State after a quiet tenure at Purdue - he logged just six receptions for 72 yards and a pair of touchdowns last year. However, the 6-foot-4 wideout did display some big-play potential, hauling in a 47-yard touchdown in the Boilermakers' opener against Indiana State. Smith, a former three-star recruit out of Houston, should immediately see a major role increase in a wide-open Spartans' receiving room, following the departures of top wideout Nick Nash, who ranked second in the nation in both yards and receptions in 2024, and Justin Lockhart. Smith will have ample opportunity to produce as a downfield threat in an offense, led by second-year starter Walker Eget, that threw the ball 64.4 percent of the time last season, the highest rate in the FBS. Smith's primary competition for targets figures to come from Danny Scudero and Malachi Riley, both of whom joined the program as transfers this season as well, along with Matthew Coleman, but the run-and-shoot variant of offense implemented, similar to Hawaii, is highly capable of supporting multiple fantasy-relevant wideouts, and there isn't a receiver on the roster expected to replicate Nash's 100-catch season from 2025, making multiple fantasy-relevant wideouts even more plausible.
