Rest-of-Season Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Contreras opted to stick around in 2025 during the Cardinals' rebuild, and in order to do so he agreed to move to first base. The hope was that a full-time move off of catcher could unlock more offensively from the 33-year-old. It didn't exactly happen, at least from a rate stats perspective, as Contreras' OPS dipped below .800 for the first time in four seasons. However, part of the benefit of not playing catcher anymore meant better health and more playing time for Contreras, who netted career highs in RBI (80), doubles (31) and runs (70). Unfortunately, he no longer has catcher eligibility, and at first base Contreras is more of an average fantasy option. He did get a bit of a boost with an offseason trade to the Red Sox, as Fenway Park is a good spot for right-handed bats and Contreras will be part of a better lineup. Read Past Outlooks

Fractures to his left forearm and left pinkie in separate incidents resulted in Contreras being limited to just 84 games last season. He was very productive when on the field, finishing with a career-high 136 OPS+ with 15 long balls over 358 plate appearances. Nearly 40 percent of Contreras' starts in 2024 came from the designated hitter spot, and the Cardinals plan to play him there and at first base regularly in 2025 with Paul Goldschmidt no longer around. Fantasy managers will be happy with that setup if it helps keep Contreras off the IL, as he's been a consistent source of offensive production, albeit one that typically falls shy of the elite at the position. The move off catcher increases his counting stat upside for 2025, but those in dynasty leagues should prepare for him to lose catcher eligibility heading into 2026.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Received interest from Mets
The Mets showed a "preliminary" interest in acquiring Contreras before the Cardinals traded him to the Red Sox on Dec. 21, reports Will Sammon and Katie Woo of The Athletic.
Analysis
Contreras would have needed to waive his no-trade clause to facilitate the trade, and it's unclear if he would have been willing to join New York. The veteran slugger indicated late last season that he wanted to remain in St. Louis, but he apparently had a change of heart after the Sonny Gray trade and informed the organization he was more open to being dealt. Contreras clubbed 20 homers with a .791 OPS in 135 games last season before being shut down in mid-September due to a shoulder strain, and he is expected to split time between first base and designated hitter for the Red Sox.
