Vaughn Grissom

25-Year-Old Second Baseman2B
Los Angeles Angels
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Grissom's fantasy outlook improved significantly when the Red Sox gave up on him and traded him to the Angels this winter. Grissom's path in Boston was blocked by a healthy (that's not a typo) Trevor Story which left Grissom stuck in Worchester all season. The 25-year old infielder is now going to play second base for the Angels as Zach Neto's double play partner and the only threat to his playing time should be either himself, or Kyren Paris having another amazing week. Grissom has put up some attractive minor league production yet his major league numbers over 350 plate appearances have been simply unimpressive. The land of misfit toys near Disneyland offers Grissom a chance to show what he is capable of at the big league level without the pressure of playing for a contending team. Color us intrigued. The Angels reinstated Grissom (wrist) from the 10-day injured list Saturday.
Analysis
Grissom has been on the injured list for the first few weeks of the season due to a sprained left wrist, but he's been playing rehab games in Triple-A since March 31. The 25-year-old logged a base hit in each of his nine minor-league contests, finishing his assignment 12-for-35 (.343) with five RBI and a run scored. Now fully healthy, he'll make his season debut at second base and bat sixth against the Reds on Saturday, though Oswald Peraza and Adam Frazier remain in the mix for playing time at the keystone. Jeimer Candelario was DFA'd in a corresponding move.

Stat Review
How does Vaughn Grissom compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
Grissom, who Boston acquired from Atlanta for Chris Sale during the 2024 offseason, was expected to start at second base but experienced groin and hamstring injuries in spring training. A failed bid to return in May led to a slower rehab path that kept him out until August. Once healthy, Grissom put together a three-week stretch of .366/.489/.549 at Triple-A Worcester and was added to the MLB roster in September. The cup of September java was small but encouraging; Grissom slashed .333/.370/.417 with two steals over eight games - better than his MLB line entering the season and more in common with his minor-league line (.312/.404/.463). The fact Sale won the NL Cy Young Award puts pressure on Grissom. Nobody is expecting the hitting equivalent of Cy Young at second base, but Grissom could put an end to the two-year rodeo at the position while providing double-digit home runs and steals. One wrinkle is that the Red Sox may deem prospect Kristian Campbell ready for MLB, and second base would be his optimal landing spot.
After getting traded from Atlanta to Boston this offseason for Chris Sale, Grissom should finally get to be an everyday second baseman in the big leagues. Grissom, 23, boasts a career .320/.407/.477 batting line in 1,474 minor-league plate appearances but was blocked at second base in Atlanta and not seen as a competent enough defensive shortstop to get regular work there. He is a career .287 hitter in the majors (.348 BABIP) and has five homers and five steals in 236 plate appearances. Grissom could push for a 15/15 season with excellent health, but the main selling point is the batting average floor - projection system Steamer has Grissom hitting .285 this year. He will be playing half his games in the second-best hitter's park, per Statcast's three-year rolling average. However, Fenway Park plays neutral for righty homers, as it's the second-best doubles park for righties due to the Green Monster. Grissom may lead off against lefties, but he could hit in the bottom third of the lineup against righties.
Grissom began the season with High-A Rome before being promoted to Double-A Mississippi. Atlanta summoned him in early August, and he filled in admirably, posting a .291/.353/.440 line in 156 plate appearances. However, a .163/.250/.163 stretch for two weeks in September cost Grissom his starting job for the last ten games and into the playoffs. Grissom's early success was driven by a high BABIP, so regression was expected. He fanned a little more in the bigs, but that's to be expected. Even though he was mostly a shortstop in the minors, Grissom played second with the Braves. With Ozzie Albies back in the fold after missing extended time due to injury in 2022, Grissom should get the first chance at stepping in as the everyday shortstop in place of Dansby Swanson, who signed with the Cubs over the winter. Grissom is looking at a long and productive career, but his plausible outcomes this season range from a full-time job to struggling in the spring and opening the season with Triple-A Gwinnett.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Possible trade candidate
2BAtlanta Braves
November 1, 2023
Grissom is a potential trade chip this offseason, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
Although there's work still to be done on defense, Grissom's bat is ready for an extended chance at the major-league level. It's difficult to see an immediate path for him in Atlanta, though, with both of its middle-infield spots spoken for. Grissom is a possibility to be used in a super-utility role, but the team might decide he's best used as trade bait.
