2026 Fantasy Outlook
Gillen's move to center field was a big success in 2025, and he now projects as a plus defender with plus speed that he uses on the bases. A prep shortstop, Gillen had shoulder surgery as an amateur that sapped his arm strength, forcing the move to the outfield. He managed a 151 wRC+ as a 19-year-old at Single-A, despite hitting just five home runs in 73 games. Gillen slashed .267/.433/.387 with a 19.8 percent walk rate, a 23.1 percent strikeout rate and 36 steals on 39 attempts in 324 plate appearances while missing time with calf and hand injuries. There's still a chance he breaks out as a power hitter in 2026 or 2027, given his excellent swing decisions and contact skill. The lefty-hitting Gillen hit all five homers against opposite-handed pitching and logged a .693 OPS against southpaws, and the Rays are typically utilizing one or two outfield platoons, so Gillen may sit or bat in the bottom third against lefties. Gillen is hitting .333 with four home runs, three steals and a 22.6 percent strikeout rate in eight games for High-A Bowling Green.
Analysis
Gillen had an excellent first full season last year (151 wRC+ in 73 games at Single-A), save for the fact he didn't hit for much over-the-fence power (five home runs, .119 ISO). Less than 10 games into his first season at High-A and he's already one homer shy of tying his career high. Gillen leads the Sally league in ISO (.556) and wRC+ (251), but the Rays will likely keep him there for at least another couple months before challenging the 20-year-old center fielder with a bump to Double-A.

2025 Fantasy Outlook
A prep infielder from Texas whom the Rays selected in the first round last year, Gillen needed shoulder surgery as a sophomore and dealt with a knee injury as a junior, but he always had a great hit tool, and he started to hit for power as a senior. The 6-foot-2 lefty hitter is a plus runner whose speed has been trending up, and he projects for at least above-average power. It's a weak crop of prep hitting prospects, and Gillen might be the safest bet to hit, although his defense is more of a question. His below-average arm is a liability at any position, and the Rays deployed him exclusively in center field during his brief pro debut after signing for $4.37 million. The lefty-hitting Gillen can expect to sit against most lefties when he initially gets to Tampa Bay in a few years, but it's possible he hits enough to eventually shed a platoon.
