2026 Fantasy Outlook
When he was healthy in 2025, Olson looked sharp, but he unfortunately only mustered 13 starts and 68.2 innings before getting shut down in late July with a right shoulder strain. Prior to that point, the righty posted a 3.15 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 65 strikeouts. Though not considered a top-tier prospect on his way up through the minors, Reese has settled in as a reliable starting option in the majors. The 26-year-old has posted a sub-4.00 ERA in each of his first three MLB seasons while compiling a respectable 8.50 K/9 for his career. Assuming he can stay healthy, Olson likely projects as Detroit's No. 3 or No. 4 starter in 2026, behind staff ace Tarik Skubal, and mixed in with Casey Mize and Jack Flaherty. Olson's career high in innings at the MLB level is 112.1, so expect some limitations from a fantasy perspective, but he should be able to muster good stats on a per-game basis. And while he looks like a solid if not spectacular option at this point in his career, Olson is still young enough where another step forward is possible. Read Past Outlooks

Out for 2026 after surgery
PDetroit Tigers
Shoulder
February 10, 2026
The Tigers placed Olson on the 60-day injured list Tuesday after he underwent a right shoulder labral repair Feb. 2 that will keep him out for the entire 2026 season.
Analysis
Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press had previously reported Feb. 6 that Olson was unlikely to be ready for Opening Day, but his prognosis ended up being worse than anticipated. Olson -- who didn't pitch after July 24 last season due to a right shoulder strain -- began a throwing progression in December, but he evidently didn't respond as well as the Tigers had hoped. Perhaps as a reaction to Olson requiring a surgery that will keep him sidelined throughout the season, the Tigers brought in some major rotation reinforcements with the recent signings of Framber Valdez Justin Verlander. With both Olson and Jackson Jobe (elbow) headed for extended absences, youngster Troy Melton may have a clearer path to the rotation in 2026.

Stat Review
How does Reese Olson compare to other starting pitchers?
This section compares his stats with all starting pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 120 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 120 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
Olson carried over his strong finish from the 2023 season with an even better showing in 2024. The right-hander had two pitches with a whiff rate of over 40 percent in his slider and changeup and he also upped his ground ball rate from above average at 42.8 percent in 2023 to elite at 50.6 percent in 2024. Olson did miss more than two months of action with a shoulder injury and had his workload limited down the stretch after returning in September, but he was able to turn in two strong starts during the ALDS. The 30.1 percent strikeout rate Olson had between the Double- and Triple-A levels has not yet translated to the majors, but he can get by with a 23 percent strikeout rate at the big-league level, particularly since it's come with an improved 7.4 percent walk rate. A favorable home park and a good young team behind him only further accentuates Olson's appeal, provided the shoulder issue is behind him.
Olson spent the first two months with Triple-A Toledo, compiling an unimpressive 6.38 ERA and 1.77 WHIP in 10 starts. However, the Tigers needed a healthy arm and Olson had been pitching better in late May, so he was summoned to make his major league debut in early June. He stayed in The Show the rest of the season, starting in 18 of 21 appearances. Olson didn't miss bats at the elevated rate exhibited in the minors, but his control improved greatly. He throws five pitches, including a 95-mph four-seam fastball and a 95-mph sinker, but his best pitch is a slider he utilized 30.6 percent of the time. Still just 24-years-old, there is a good chance Olson can recapture some of the dominance exhibited in the minors, though only his slider is deemed above average according to Stuff+. Olson has carved out a role in the Tigers staff, but he's not assured of being in the Opening Day rotation. Even so, he's displayed enough to be a fantasy asset, with sneaky upside.
If we sort Double-A pitchers with 60-plus innings by K-BB%, Olson ranks fifth, behind the likes of Brandon Pfaadt and Eury Perez and directly ahead of Gavin Stone and Kyle Harrison. Scouts seem split on the quality of his stuff and whether he has enough command to start, so Olson is never ranked near those guys on prospect lists, but it's an interesting profile, given the ease of entry into Detroit's rotation. He is on the 40-man roster and turns 24 in July, so Olson could make his big-league debut this summer, perhaps as a swingman or long reliever.

Could open season sidelined
PDetroit Tigers
February 7, 2026
Olson, who's dealing with a shoulder injury, might not be ready for Opening Day, according to Evan Petzold of The Detroit Free Press.
Analysis
Olson sustained a right shoulder strain in July and was placed on the 60-day injured list. While he was expected to return to the mound in the playoffs, that never came to fruition. The right-hander's recovery hasn't gone as expected, and now there's a realistic chance he might not be ready for Opening Day. Olson is expected to be part of the rotation once he's ready to pitch. He made 13 starts in the 2025 regular season, posting a 3.15 ERA with a 1.21 WHIP and a 65:25 K:BB across 68.2 innings.
