Higgins saw his most extended playing time at the MLB level in 2022 and responded with six home runs and a .693 OPS across 74 games. For a player who had just one hit in 23 at-bats a year earlier as a 28-year-old rookie, his production wasn't too bad. The Cubs apparently didn't see enough to keep him around, however, and he elected free agency after being removed from the 40-man roster. Higgins subsequently joined Arizona on a minor-league deal and should serve as organizational depth with Gabriel Moreno and Carson Kelly locked in as the clubs top catchers.

Ten of those starts have come in the last 12 games as Chicago has split time at first base between Higgins and Patrick Wisdom and given Higgins a couple of starts behind the plate. The 29-year-old hasn't made the most of his opportunity in that span, going 3-for-35 with 16 strikeouts and having his season OPS drop from .867 to .719. With Wisdom sidelined by a finger injury, Higgins should have an even clearer path to playing time in the near term.
