Fails to make Opening Day roster
OFSan Diego Padres  AAA
March 22, 2026
The Padres reassigned Reyes to minor-league camp Saturday.
Analysis
After failing to secure a spot on the Padres' Opening Day roster, Reyes is likely to begin the season as a utility player at Triple-A El Paso. The 32-year-old previously saw action in 19 games at the big-league level with the Yankees in 2025, slashing .194/.242/.226 over 34 plate appearances before being outrighted off the 40-man roster in June.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2020
2019
Reyes fell into a good situation in 2023 with the Red Sox, whose middle infield was in flux all season. Trevor Story's elbow injury and Enrique Hernandez's backslide at the plate created opportunities for the journeyman infielder and others. The situation prior to spring training got less hopeful for Reyes after the Red Sox acquired Vaughn Grissom from Atlanta in the Chris Sale trade. Early on, Grissom is perceived as the leader to become Boston's everyday second baseman. The 30-year-old Reyes has never had more than 185 plate appearances in the majors and is probably going to serve as a backup utility infielder - manager Alex Cora said last season that he did not view Reyes as an everyday player.
Reyes spent about half the season on the Pirates' big-league roster, mostly in a bench role. He saw time at six different positions but did very little in his 157 trips to the plate, hitting just .203/.274/.322 with two homers. According to Statcast, that line was a result of poor performance, not bad luck, as he finished with an xBA of .192 and an xSLG of .284. He did at least look far more competent in 51 games for Triple-A Indianapolis, hitting .286/.342/.543, but the Pirates have seemingly lost interest in a player who has yet to find big-league success through his age-26 season, as he was designated for assignment in January. Reyes' defensive versatility could help him find his way back to a bench spot at some point this season, but it's a stretch to predict a player with his lack of a track record to earn much playing time let alone to become a valuable fantasy asset.
Reyes began the season at Double-A but spent much of the year producing good numbers at Triple-A Indianapolis (hitting .289/.341/.435) before earning a big-league callup in September. He continued his hot hitting with the Pirates, posting a .293/.349/.483 slash line with three homers in 18 games while playing four different positions. Gregory Polanco's shoulder injury leaves playing time in the outfield available at least at the start of this season, and Reyes should get a shot to stake his claim. He doesn't project as anything close to a star, but the ability to play all over the field gives him multiple paths to big-league playing time. He could take a step forward offensively if the excellent plate discipline he showed in 2017 at Double-A (14.5% strikeout rate, 10.6% walk rate) begins to translate to the majors.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Poor defense proves costly
OFBoston Red Sox  AAA
April 30, 2024
According to Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican, Red Sox manager Alex Cora specifically mentioned Reyes' defense when discussing why the infielder was designated for assignment.
Analysis
Reyes played in 21 games during the first month of the campaign and saw action at all four infield positions, but that versatility was offset by four errors and a minus-four outs above average. The defense certainly wasn't good, but he may have been able to stick around with a decent showing at the plate; however, he posted a .451 OPS in 64 plate appearances. Reyes hit .287 in 64 games last season and usually provides decent infield defense, so he could garner some interest on the waiver wire.
