2026 Fantasy Outlook
Cabrera's 2025 campaign came to an abrupt halt in mid-May after suffering a fractured ankle while attempting to slide into base. He underwent season-ending surgery and appeared in just 34 major-league games in which he logged a .630 OPS across 122 plate appearances while recording 17 runs, four doubles, one home run and 11 RBI. Cabrera should be ready to go for spring training, and his ability to play in the infield and outfield will likely earn him a spot on the Opening Day roster in a utility role. Read Past Outlooks
Opening Day availability 'TBD'
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that Cabrera's (ankle) status for Opening Day is "TBD," Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
Cabrera is working his way back from last May's surgery to repair a fracture and ligament damage in his left ankle. He has been going through drills and is coming along well, but the utility player has yet to practice sliding on his surgically repaired ankle and doesn't appear close to playing in games. If healthy, Cabrera would likely be part of the Yankees' roster in a reserve role, but the club could play it safe and have him start the regular season on the injured list.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
Cabrera got the Opening Day start at third base for the Yankees and cracked seven hits -- including two homers -- in the team's season-opening series in Houston. It was mostly downhill from there and he quickly faded into a utility role. He made just 18 starts in the second half of the regular season, which doesn't exactly bode well for 2025. Cabrera makes consistent contact and hit a career-high eight homers last season, and his defensive versatility is valuable, more so in real life. In another organization, Cabrera might be given more chances, but it's tough to see him breaking out of a part-time role in New York. The bar is simply too high, and Cabrera, who will turn 26 during spring training, hasn't shown that he can clear that bar.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Uncertain for Opening Day
Cabrera, who's dealing with an ankle injury, is uncertain to be available for Opening Day, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.
Analysis
Cabrera is working his way back from the ankle surgery he underwent in May of last year to repair a fracture and ligament damage, and manager Aaron Boone revealed the uncertainty regarding Cabrera's Opening Day status. Cabrera figures to be a bench piece even if given the green light to play from the start of the season, so he's not expected to be an impact bat in the Yankees lineup for fantasy purposes.
