2026 Fantasy Outlook
Mears enjoyed the best campaign of his career with Milwaukee in 2025, finishing the regular season with a 3.49 ERA and 0.97 WHIP over 56.2 innings while also notching his first career save. The 29-year-old righty is unlikely to beat out Carlos Estevez and Lucas Erceg in the race for high-leverage opportunities, but Mears will provide some depth into Kansas City's middle-relief unit. Strong start to season
Mears allowed no hits and a walk while striking out two over a scoreless inning in Tuesday's 2-1 loss against Cleveland.
Analysis
Mears delivered a clean eighth inning Tuesday, with a Chase DeLauter walk serving as the only blemish in a scoreless frame that kept the game tied heading into the ninth before a Cleveland walk-off. Coming off a 3.49 ERA and 0.97 WHIP across 56.2 regular-season innings last year with Milwaukee, Mears is off to a strong start this campaign with Kansas City, as he's yet to allow a run through five innings while already picking up a win and a hold.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2021
Alfred Delia introduced himself to the world in 2018 when he told an ESPN broadcast, "Back home, they call me Big Al, and I hit dingers." Mears could mimic Delia and say, "Back home, they call me Slick Nick. I throw hard and give up homers." Mears has now pitched in three different organizations since the 2020 season, because he has a big fastball and has struck out 33.6 percent of the batters he has faced in the minors. His major league strikeout rate is 24.6 percent, but a 14.3 K-BB percentage, a 1.53 WHIP, and a 1.2 HR/9 help explain why Mears has pitched in three organizations over the past three seasons. The stuff metrics love his upside, and his slider has a 50 percent whiff rate to it. However, for Mears to take a step up the leverage ladder in Milwaukee, he has to show more command within the zone. Milwaukee has a tremendous track record of getting more results from these types of projects, so things could get rolling for Mears quickly if something clicks this season. He is a classic, one-skill-away guy from finding some success in 2025 and should have a long leash with Milwaukee since he is out of options.
