2026 Fantasy Outlook
Alvarez played 58 games for Atlanta while Austin Riley dealt with injuries, and the dropoff from the former to the latter was stark. If Atlanta could combine Alvarez's speed with Riley's raw power, they would have something, but that type of creation is not possible. Alvarez is an atypical fit for the corner because he does not hit with much power and is not projected to do so as he matures, but he can pick it at the hot corner and has a nice all-fields approach. Should Atlanta make a trade this season to acquire in-season help, one would have to imagine Alvarez is near the top of the list other organizations will want in return for whatever they're sending to Atlanta. Alvarez's 2026 fantasy future will once again depend on injuries to the main roster, otherwise he will spend more time in Gwinnett. According to David O'Brien of The Athletic, there's a chance Alvarez is called up by Atlanta in the near future since Ozzie Albies is headed to the injured list with a wrist injury.
Analysis
The club doesn't have a clear replacement for Albies already on the big-league roster, as the only middle infielder besides starting shortstop Orlando Arcia is journeyman Zack Short, who has a .478 OPS this season. Alvarez is one of the organization's top prospects and has crushed Triple-A pitching since being promoted in June with a 1.011 OPS in 27 games. If called up by Atlanta, the 21-year-old would likely remain at his natural position of shortstop, which would push Arcia to second base.
