Matos now has nearly 600 career plate appearances with the big league club, and despite a solid 14.7% strikeout rate and a decent 6.0% walk rate, Matos's career line is .231/.281/.369. Over the past three seasons, Matos possesses the lowest batting average of any player with at least 500 plate appearances and a strikeout rate below 15%, leading Santiago Espinal by 14 points. That's the challenge with Matos: he makes a lot of contact but has not done much with it. In his defense, he has had awful BABIP fortunes each of the past two seasons and something has to give soon. He did show more pull power in 2025, which was a positive sign given he does not turn 24 until late January. The 24-year-old Matos is a former top prospect but has managed just a .231/.281/.369 batting line in 593 career plate appearances at the big-league level. Matos spent 2024 on the Sacramento shuttle, bouncing between the majors and Triple-A six times, ending the year on the farm. While with the Giants, Matos was a regular for a couple of stretches, but he also fell into a platoon. He fanned at a tidy 15.4 percent rate, but his quality of contact was weak, though his hard-hit rate and barrel rate were better than in his rookie season. Even so, Matos was less productive last year, as his .221 BABIP was 64 points shy of his 2023 level. Part of the BABIP decline was him hitting more fly-balls without the power to clear the fence. Entering his 23-year-old season, Matos isn't a finished product, but until he adds some exit velocity, he'll be at the whims of batted-ball fate. His defense isn't strong enough to keep his bat in the lineup, and with Jung Hoo Lee back, Matos is looking at a reserve role, and likely a few more bus rides to and from Sacramento.
There might not have been a prospect to improve their standing more than Matos did last season. He was awful and often injured in the low minors in 2022, but the young outfielder earned a promotion to the big leagues in mid-June after getting off to a blistering .350/.415/.561 start between Double-A Richmond and Triple-A Sacramento. Matos wasn't ever able to get going with the Giants, eventually leading to a couple stints back in the minors during the second half. The struggles weren't surprising given that he was just 21 and had very little upper-minors experience before getting called up. Matos' elite contact rates from the minors (12.2 percent strikeout rate) did carry over to the majors (13 percent) and the hope is that some over-the-fence power will come along as he matures. Ultimately, though, there are still a wide range of outcomes here.
There are contextual factors (quad injury in May, .226 BABIP) that didn't help Matos, but there's no denying his 2022 season was among the most disappointing by a top prospect. Always young yet advanced for his levels, there was nothing in Matos' profile to suggest he might struggle at High-A, but he slashed .211/.275/.344 with a 74 wRC+ and a 31.9 Soft%. Amid all the struggles, his 16.0 K% and ability to hit 11 homers and steal 11 bases in 91 games show there are still skills to work with. The hitter-friendly Arizona Fall League seemed like a great chance for Matos to end the year on a high note, but he had a .640 OPS with 20 strikeouts and two home runs in 22 games. He is only entering his age-21 season, so it's still early, but it's currently tough to see much more realistic upside than a Manuel Margot type of outfielder who plays a bunch and compiles unspectacular counting stats.
Matos lived up to the hype in his full-season debut. A top-30 prospect for dynasty leagues before playing his first game at Low-A, the lean, athletic outfielder hit .313/.358/.494 with 15 home runs, 21 steals (on 26 attempts) and an elite 12.4 K% in 109 games as one of the youngest hitters at the level. It's unusual for a teenager to make contact at such a high clip in full-season ball, but to do so while also hitting for notable power is quite rare. Matos' batted-ball profile wasn't exquisite (52.3 Pull%, 19.4 LD%, 30.4 IFFB%), and it's clear that he is an aggressive hitter who was able to get by on rare talent among his peer group -- something that might not translate, at least initially, against more advanced pitchers. However, the fact that he is already checking so many important boxes should leave dynasty-league managers quite bullish on Matos heading into his age-20 season.
Matos turned heads in 2019 with an eye-popping statistical performance in the Dominican Summer League and AZL as a 17-year-old. The pandemic prevented him from having a true stateside breakout in 2020, but he worked diligently on his body, adding good weight (now 6-foot, 186 pounds), and really stood out during the fall instructional league. Matos, who turned 19 in January, has a chance to be a true five-tool player. He will stick in center field thanks to above-average speed and good instincts and he also has an above-average arm. He is most impressive at the plate, however, where he has the bat speed, pitch recognition and contact skill to become a plus hitter who also hits 20-plus home runs annually. Matos has a chance to be fast-tracked going forward, likely spending most of the 2021 season at High-A.
The July 2, 2018 international signing class is looking very promising, and Matos is the big sleeper of the group. Unlike Marco Luciano, Noelvi Marte and Orelvis Martinez, Matos did not receive a seven-figure bonus ($725,000), but he performed like a future star in his pro debut. The 5-foot-11, 160-pound center fielder showed off big tools in 55 games in the Dominican Summer League, hitting .362/.430/.570 (171 wRC+) with seven home runs, 20 steals (on 22 attempts), a .209 ISO, 7.0 BB% and 11.1 K%. He also excelled in five AZL games to close the year. As with many overqualified DSL hitters, Matos pulled the ball too much (59.9 Pull%), simply because it was an easy way to dominate on that circuit. However, with his elite contact skills and bat speed, he is a good bet to be able to make the necessary adjustments against advanced pitching. Look for Matos to spend most of his age-18 season at Low-A.
