2026 Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Gray spent most of last season recovering from Tommy John surgery that he underwent in July of 2024. He progressed enough in his recovery to embark on a rehab stint in September, working his way up to a 2.2-inning outing with Triple-A Rochester in his last appearance. Gray is on track to report for the start of spring training, but he'll likely see his workload restricted in 2026, given that he's pitched only 35 innings over the last two seasons. He also didn't demonstrate great control before TJ surgery, posting a 9.0 percent K-BB rate across 159 innings in 2023 while finishing in the bottom third in xERA (5.03) and groundball rate (38.0 percent). Still, Gray projects to be the No. 2 or 3 option in the Nationals' rotation come Opening Day, so he would have fantasy relevance in roto leagues should he maintain that role. Read Past Outlooks
Finally back on mound Monday
Gray gave up one run on two hits over 1.2 innings during Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros. He struck out three without walking a batter.
Analysis
He was wilder than the line would suggest, uncorking one wild pitch and plunking two Houston batters, but it was still a mostly successful spring debut for Gray after he missed most of 2024 and 2025 due to Tommy John surgery. The right-hander popped 94 mph with his first fastball of the day, and while he unsurprisingly couldn't maintain that velocity, he liberally deployed his slider, sweeper and curveball among his 39 pitches (25 strikes). Given the long layoff, Gray will be a risky fantasy option this season, but the Nationals are counting on him to at least take a regular turn in the rotation.

Gray got rocked in his first two starts last season before landing on the injured list with an elbow injury which eventually required Tommy John surgery and an internal brace procedure. Because that operation didn't occur until July, the right-hander won't be available until the tail-end of the 2025 season even in a best-case scenario. Gray had stretches during the 2023 season when it looked like he might be figuring things out, but the control and the results have never been there consistently.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Candidate for Opening Day starter
Gray will be a candidate to open the 2026 season as the team's ace, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
Gray missed the majority of the 2025 season while on the mend from UCL surgery, but he returned to make two starts before the end of the campaign. After presumably working through a normal offseason, the 28-year-old is in the mix to open the year as the team's top arm. However, Cade Cavalli and Jake Irvin are also candidates to take the mound on Opening Day, per Camerato.
