2026 Fantasy Outlook
The Platinum Glove winner in 2022, Trevino is valued for his defense at the game's most rigorous position, as well as his work ethic and communication with the pitching staff. After acquiring him from the Yankees last offseason, the Reds quickly signed Trevino to a two-year extension in March of 2025. His bat lags well behind his glove, and things got especially ugly down the stretch, with Trevino slashing .174/.207/.202 in the second half. He hit a career-high 20 doubles but only cleared the fence four times in 93 games last season, and only once has he reached double-digit homers. On a positive note, Trevino avoided the IL and cleared 300 PA for the third time in five years after missing time due to injury the previous two seasons. Now 33, Trevino will continue to help lead a young group of pitchers while serving as the No. 2 catcher behind Tyler Stephenson in Cincinnati. Read Past Outlooks
Catches, hits in cage
Trevino (back) caught two simulated innings and hit in the batting cages Friday, MLB.com reports.
Analysis
Trevino has elevated his baseball activity this week, which began with light throwing sessions. If he comes out of Friday's workout without an issue, manager Terry Francona will begin ramping up his activity.

This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.
* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Trevino was an odd platoon partner for Austin Wells in 2024 for a few reasons. Neither hit lefty pitching well at all, so their platoon usage was not cut and dry. Trevino had previously hit lefties well, but the stickiness of that skill year over year is very poor, and Trevino reminded us of that yet again. Trevino is also the opposite of Wells behind the plate, because Trevino is one of the worst catchers in the league in prohibiting stolen bases. He caught seven of 52 attempts with his first percentile pop time. He is, however, a fantastic blocker and framer, which endears him to both the coaches and the pitchers, but the Yankees still elected to trade him to the Reds during the offseason. He should still see decent volume as Cincinnati's No. 2 catcher given Tyler Stephenson's injury history, but Trevino won't be fantasy relevant without a major offensive turnaround.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Not defending run game
Trevino's 2.08-second pop time ranks 65th of 67 catchers while his 71.6-mph arm strength ranks last, reports Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News.
Analysis
The issues in the run game have been especially prevalent of late, with Boston and Baltimore stealing 14 bases against Trevino over his past three starts. The 31-year-old's strong work as a framer balances out his defensive value, but it could be an issue for the Yankees if opposing teams continue to run wild. Austin Wells could see more work behind the plate as a result, though his .610 OPS is a significant drop from Trevino's .741 figure.
