2026 Fantasy Outlook
Oviedo had a successful return from Tommy John surgery in 2025, immediately sitting in his normal velocity range with his fastball while also ending the season healthy. His results were also mostly positive, as he allowed more than two earned runs in only one of his nine starts. Those results were backed by strong peripherals, though it is worth taking Oviedo's career-best 24.7 percent strikeout rate with a grain of salt, considering he threw more than 5.0 innings only once and almost never faced an opposing lineup for a third time. The other concern was Oviedo's spiked walk rate, which has been a problem throughout his career and was likely worsened in 2025 due to the long layoff. A trade early in the offseason to Boston should provide him some security in role, as he'll slot into the middle of the rotation. Durability and walks are a concern entering 2026, but Oviedo should have the chance to pitch to around a 4.00 ERA while striking out close to a better per inning, and he could be in line for some additional win potential by shifting from Pittsburgh's supporting cast to Boston's. Shut down with flexor strain
PBoston Red Sox
Elbow
April 8, 2026
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that Oviedo will be shut down for six week after being diagnosed with a right flexor strain, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
Cora is optimistic Oviedo can avoid surgery, but the Red Sox will have to wait and see if the injury heals with extended rest. Oviedo will need plenty of time to get ramped back up after the six-week shutdown period, so he'll be in line for an extended absence, even if all goes well during the recovery process. The righty is already on the 15-day injured list and is a candidate to shift to the 60-day IL if/when Boston needs to free up a spot on its 40-man roster.

Stat Review
How does Johan Oviedo compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.

The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • Balls Hit 95+ MPH

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025

2023
2021
Oviedo missed all of the 2024 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. It was a disappointing setback after showing he showed signs of promise across 32 starts in 2023, allowing two or fewer earned runs on 18 occasions. On the other hand, he still experienced plenty of inconsistency, as he also allowed five or more earned runs on six occasions. The primary culprit for that inconsistency is Oviedo's lack of control (10.6 BB% in 2023), something that is only likely to worsen upon his return to the mound due to his long layoff. Another concern is his usage in 2025, as the strength of the Pirates' roster is their pitching staff. That could set Oviedo up to pitch out of the bullpen or to begin the season in the minors as he has one remaining option available.
Oviedo got his first opportunity as a starter across a full season in the majors in 2023, which was characterized by inconsistency. Judging solely by his surface stats, he allowed five or more earned runs in six of 32 starts. On the other hand, he allowed two or fewer earned runs on 18 occasions. The end result was a 4.31 ERA paired with a 1.37 WHIP across 177.2 innings. Unfortunately, news emerged early in the offseason that Oviedo was dealing with elbow inflammation, and shortly thereafter it was announced that he would undergo Tommy John surgery -- meaning he won't take the mound again until 2025. His only potential appeal would be in dynasty or deep keeper leagues, but there should be significant concerns about his skills after returning from surgery. More specifically, his 10.6 BB% was a problem that contributed to his inconsistent results in 2022, something that could only worsen once he is able to return.
Oviedo split the 2022 season between the Cardinals and Pirates and posted 56 total innings at the big-league level. By the time he was traded to Pittsburgh, Oviedo had shifted to primarily a relief role, though that changed with the Pirates as his final seven appearances with the club came out of the rotation. He posted a strong 3.23 ERA in that span, but underlying concerns about his walk rate (11.9 percent) were still present. Both his struggles with control and his pitch mix - Oviedo relies primarily on a fastball and slider-suggest his future role could end up being in high-leverage relief. However, the Pirates are still in a rebuild and looking to find long-term contributors, meaning they could give Oviedo - who will only be 25 on Opening Day -- a long look as a starter in 2023.
Oviedo was thrown right into the fire by the Cards in 2020, making important September starts in his first year of major-league experience. The right-hander ended the season with a 5.47 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and a 16:10 K:BB across 24.2 innings (five starts). We didn't see the same strikeout stuff from the 22-year-old in the bigs compared to what we saw at Triple-A in 2019, as he posted a 14.3 K% in 2020 versus a 24.9 K% at Double-A. Despite this, Oviedo showcased a strong pitching repertoire, flashing a fastball around 95 mph, along with a slider as his clear No. 2 pitch. The prospect wasn't dominant by any means in 2020, but he should still receive an opportunity to at least compete for a starting job in spring training. It would be a surprise if Oviedo wasn't called up to the big club at some point in 2021.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Drawing trade interest
PPittsburgh Pirates
November 18, 2025
The Pirates have received trade interest in Oviedo, Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic report.
Analysis
Oviedo missed all of 2024 while recovering from Tommy John surgery and most of 2025 after suffering a right lat strain, but he pitched well down the stretch, posting a 3.57 ERA and 42:23 K:BB over 40.1 innings covering nine starts. The Pirates are likely to trade a starter in exchange for offensive help, though Mitch Keller is seen as the likeliest to be dealt since he's owed $54.5 million over the next three seasons. Oviedo is projected to make around $2 million in 2026 and will be under team control in 2027, as well.
