2026 Fantasy Outlook
A first-round pick in 2023, Waldrep spent the majority of the 2025 season at Triple-A Gwinnett, posting a 4.42 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 92:50 K:BB over 91.2 innings. Upon his return to the major leagues in August, Waldrep rattled off four consecutive wins with an unbelievable 0.73 ERA in his first four starts (two earned runs in 24.2 innings). From there, he was closer to his Triple-A marks, with one eight-run blowup Sept. 12 against Houston marring the numbers down the stretch. Waldrep's strikeout rate was modest at 24.0%, but his splitter is very good and the curveball gives him another putaway pitch. The initial run of success kept his overall numbers strong with Atlanta, and while they are largely unsupported by his underlying metrics, Waldrep has likely positioned himself as a member of the starting rotation to begin 2026. Set for elbow surgery Monday
Waldrep will undergo surgery Monday to remove loose bodies from his right elbow, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
Bowman reported previously that if surgery was recommended for Waldrep, the pitcher would likely be sidelined for approximately three months. The right-hander will be placed on the 60-day injured list, though that transaction hasn't officially been made yet. Waldrep showed signs of a breakout in 2025 with a 2.88 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 55:22 K:BB over 56.1 innings, but it will be a while before he's seen in a big-league uniform again. With Spencer Schwellenbach also undergoing an elbow procedure, Joey Wentz and Bryce Elder have moved up in Atlanta's rotation pecking order.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
Waldrep's best stretch of 2024 was an eight-start run from April 20 through June 2, when he logged a 1.68 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 52:13 K:BB in 48.1 innings, primarily at Double-A. From there, he was promoted to the majors where he struggled mightily in two starts before suffering an elbow injury that cost him six weeks. He never fully settled back in at Triple-A once healthy, as he managed a 2.30 ERA at that level but his 1.47 WHIP and 27:20 K:BB in 31.1 innings paint an ugly picture. The balls and strikes challenge system at Triple-A didn't help matters for Waldrep, whose poor control has been his one big knock dating back to college. He has a devastating splitter and a mid-90s fastball, but his fastball lacks ideal shape and movement, and it's his third-best pitch behind his splitter and upper-80s slider. His Aug. 16 start where he walked six batters and struck out five over five scoreless innings is Waldrep in a nutshell - he could have success as a starter, but he isn't particularly close to doing so consistently due to his poor control. There's long been a thought that Waldrep could eventually fit best as a late-inning reliever, where his fastball might tick up to triple digits and his slider could touch 91-92 mph while relying on his plus-plus splitter to sit batters down, but Atlanta will likely keep trying to develop him as a starter in 2025.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Atlanta not inclined to trade
Atlanta has received trade inquiries on Waldrep but has told interested clubs it isn't inclined to deal the pitcher, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
Waldrep was torched for 13 runs and had a 3:8 K:BB over seven innings in his first two major-league starts in 2024 and also missed some time with an elbow issue. However, the 2023 first-round pick is still very highly thought of and won't turn 23 until March, so Atlanta is not inclined to include him in any potential trade.
