2026 Fantasy Outlook
Valdez is just one of five pitchers to work at least 900 innings over the past four baseball seasons, joining Logan Webb, Kevin Gausman, Jose Berrios and Zack Wheeler. Out of all pitchers with at least 600 innings pitched from 2021-2025, his 68 wins ranks first, his 3.20 ERA ranks eighth, his strikeouts 13th, and his 1.17 WHIP 23rd. He allowed two or fewer earned runs in 18 of his 31 starts in 2025, with 11 of those including zero or one earned runs in six-plus innings of work. He also threw in five outings with 10-plus strikeouts. He is, however, not immune to occasional awful outing, as in 2025 he twice allowed seven earned runs without any homers allowed and had seven overall outings with at least five earned runs allowed. Only Webb and Max Fried have better HR/9 than Valdez has had over the past four seasons for the aforementioned qualification, which helps Valdez avoid bigger troubles. If you are a believer in Saberhagenmetrics, Valdez does better in even years, but his overall consistency over the past four seasons is tough for any other pitcher to match. Valdez is not flashy, but he volumes his way to success like few others. Read Past Outlooks

Analysis
In a battle of left-handers, Valdez matched up with Cole Ragans and exited the mound after 87 pitches (58 strikes) in line for the loss, but Detroit pushed across two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to flip the script. Valdez has produced three quality starts in his first four trips to the mound for the Tigers, and he'll take a 3.75 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 13:7 K:BB through 24 innings into his next outing, which is set to come on the road this weekend in Boston.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
2022
2021
2020
2019
Valdez has settled in as the ace of Houston's staff over the past few years, and that trend continued in 2024 as he posted a 2.91 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 169:55 K:BB across 176.1 innings. A 3.36 xERA and 3.08 xFIP indicate he may have been a bit fortunate with the results, but those numbers are still strong and aren't anything to be concerned about. The left-hander's 16.2 percent K-BB% is solid if not a bit underwhelming for a pitcher of his caliber, as he continues to rely on inducing grounders (60.6 percent groundball rate). Valdez's recent track record of availability and effectiveness give him a strong floor, but his ceiling is more limited than the top-tier fantasy pitchers due to the lower strikeout totals.

Pirates seen as long shot
The Pirates are "a long shot, at best" to sign Valdez, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported earlier Wednesday that the Pirates had emerged as an aggressive suitor of Valdez, but Mackey hears it's unlikely the two sides ultimately come together on a deal. The Orioles have been linked to Valdez throughout the offseason, and the Blue Jays are seen as a potential landing spot, as well.
