2026 Fantasy Outlook
Diaz was his dominant self in 2025, ranking second among qualified relievers with a 1.63 ERA and 38% strikeout rate, while tying for fifth with a 0.87 WHIP. Perhaps his most impressive highlight was an absurd 33-game stretch during which he permitted only 1 ER, posting a 0.27 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 50:11 K:BB across 33.2 innings. Diaz didn't produce as many saves (T-11th) as some of the other full-time closers - he was limited to just five over the final two months as New York crumbled down the stretch - but his stability in the role was among the highest in the league. Given his outstanding performance, the right-hander declined his $18.5M option for 2026, which would have been a $3M pay cut compared to what he earned last year. He also declined the Mets $22.05M qualifying offer, instead signing a 3-year, $69M deal with the Dodgers to set a new record for a reliever based on his $23 million average annual value. Diaz will take over as closer for the two-time defending World Series champs. Read Past Outlooks
Passed over for save chance Tuesday
Diaz threw a bullpen session Tuesday but didn't get called upon for a save opportunity in the Dodgers' 2-1 win over the Mets. His status is set to re-evaluated before Wednesday's contest, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.
Analysis
Neither the Dodgers nor Diaz have indicated that he's hurt, and manager Dave Roberts said Monday that he expects the reliever to be available during the current series versus New York. However, the team opted to have the veteran closer throw a bullpen session Tuesday, which essentially ruled him out from being able to pitch during the contest later that evening. Diaz has displayed decreased velocity early in the campaign, though he's noted that his velocity has often been down early in previous seasons before eventually ticking back up. The missed opportunity for a save Tuesday is frustrating for fantasy managers who invested heavily in Diaz, but for now, the best course of action seems to be to stick with the reliever with the expectation that he'll get back to closing sooner rather than later.

Diaz returned to action last season after missing all of 2023 due to a torn ACL. The right-hander didn't pitch at the level of his remarkable 2022 campaign, but his 38.9 percent strikeout rate ranked 2nd among relief pitchers and was right in line with his career average (40.1 percent). Diaz only posted 20 saves, but he missed some time near midseason (shoulder injury, 10-game suspension) and finished most of the games he appeared in when healthy. He worked through a rough patch in May and had notable home (1.74 ERA) and road (5.96 ERA) splits, but his stability as the Mets closer was never in question. On average, the 31-year-old has been selected as the third closer off the board in early 2025 drafts. He warrants an early pick thanks to his 30-save and 100-strikeout upside.
