Dalton Rushing

25-Year-Old CatcherC
Los Angeles Dodgers
2026 Fantasy Outlook
The Dodgers finally made room on their roster for Rushing to get a chance at the big-league level when they DFA'd long-time backup catcher Austin Barnes in mid-May. That move led to Rushing getting his first big-league call-up and a chance to serve as Will Smith's backup behind the plate, but Rushing didn't do much with the opportunity, posting a .582 OPS with four homers, 24 RBI and an ugly 37.4 percent strikeout rate across 155 plate appearances. An ill-timed shin injury and IL stint in early September came just as Smith suffered a hand injury that eventually landed him on the injured list too, and Ben Rortvedt played well enough as the fill-in that he, rather than Rushing, claimed the No. 1 catcher role late into the regular season while making the postseason roster behind Smith. With that said, Rortvedt is now with Cincinnati and Los Angeles reportedly shied away from considering trading Rushing last summer, so he still seems to have some leash in the organization. Smith is locked into a 10-year contract that runs until 2034, so Rushing doesn't appear to have a path to the starting catcher role, but he should open the season as Smith's backup while potentially getting additional looks in the outfield. Grand slam, double in win
CLos Angeles Dodgers
April 16, 2026
Rushing went 2-for-4 with a grand slam, a double and two total runs scored in Wednesday's 8-2 win over the Mets.
Analysis
Rushing got a rare chance to play since Shohei Ohtani was in the lineup only as a pitcher, opening up the designated-hitter role. As has been the case early this year, Rushing took advantage of his opportunity with a big performance, driving in half of the Dodgers' runs with his eighth-inning slam to turn the game into a blowout. He's played in just five contests so far, but he's gone 9-for-17 (.529) with four homers, eight RBI, seven runs scored and two doubles. Rushing has already matched his homer total from last season, but he still doesn't have a clear path to playing time aside from the occasional start behind the dish when Will Smith needs to rest his legs.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2023
Rushing was a good prospect prior to 2024, but he improved in every aspect of the game while setting himself up for a chance to compete for an Opening Day job in 2025. He upped his hard-hit rate from 25.1 percent to 36.9 percent, while cutting his strikeout rate from 24.4 percent to 20.3 percent and upping his contact rate from 67.9 percent to 75.7 percent. Rushing will not enter the year atop of the Dodgers' catching depth chart, but he is arguably the best catching prospect in the game yet saw more starts in left field than at catcher down the stretch at Triple-A. He could be the backup catcher (Austin Barnes has a $3.5 million club option) and a part-time left fielder next year, which could allow Rushing to play as much as a starting catcher despite being Will Smith's backup. Rushing's fantasy prime could actually mirror Smith's, as a top-five catcher who hits 20-plus home runs while hitting for a good average and logging elite on-base percentages relative to other catchers.
Rushing, the 40th overall pick from last year's draft, hasn't played against age-appropriate competition yet in the pros, but his statistical output at Single-A as a 21-year-old was infallible. He didn't get to do much his first two years at Louisville while playing behind eventual No. 1 overall pick Henry Davis, but Rushing was excellent in the Cape Cod League and as a junior. His exit velocity and swing decision data is elite, it's just a matter of seeing how it translates at High-A and, more importantly, Double-A, but if he stays on this trajectory, he could eventually be seen as a top-10 real-life prospect. Rushing's talent and potential warrants excitement, but we are seeing a catching renaissance in dynasty leagues and the Dodgers' organization itself has an excess. However, Rushing already started playing some first base last season, and if the bat is as good as it seems, he could start plenty at designated hitter too.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Outfield experiment over?
CLos Angeles Dodgers
February 21, 2026
Rushing isn't expected to see time in the outfield in 2026 and will instead operate as a backup at catcher, first base and designated hitter, according to Katie Woo of The Athletic.
Analysis
Rushing played in 31 minor-league games as an outfielder in 2024, but he did it just twice in 2025 and won't be doing it at all in 2026. Rushing has been linked with a move away from the Dodgers via trade, but right now, it doesn't seem as if that'll be the case.
