2026 Fantasy Outlook
In his first year with the Cubs, Rea filled a back-of-the-rotation role and posted solid if not spectacular numbers. The veteran righty logged 159.1 innings across 32 appearances (27 starts) while compiling a 3.95 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 127 strikeouts. Rea also recorded 11 wins, which was one away from the career high he set a year earlier in Milwaukee. The ERA represented a new career best for Rea and it was the first time he ever posted a sub-4.00 figure across seven MLB seasons. The 35-year-old will never be confused for a staff ace, and with a career 7.32 K/9 and 4.46 FIP, his upside moving forward is limited. However, Rea is back with the Cubs in 2026 on a one-year, $5.5 million deal, and he figures to slot in as the team's No. 5 starter, at least until Justin Steele (elbow) is able to return, which could push the former into more of a swing role. Rea looked comfortable in Chicago last year, so he could provide some fantasy value as a streamer in the right matchups. Read Past Outlooks
Picks up win Tuesday
Rea (2-0) earned the win Tuesday against the Phillies, allowing three runs on four hits and no walks with five strikeouts across six innings.
Analysis
Riley Martin served as the opener for the Cubs in this one, firing a hitless and scoreless first inning on six pitches before Rea took over on the mound in the bottom of the second. Rea doesn't have overpowering stuff but was able to keep the Philly offense off-balance with his seven-pitch mix across 87 total pitches. Once Matthew Boyd (biceps) returns, perhaps as early as next Monday, Rea projects to remain in the rotation for the Cubs over Javier Assad after Assad was blasted for nine runs on 11 hits over 4.1 innings in Monday's loss to the Phillies. Rea has a 3.63 ERA and 15:3 K:BB across 17.1 innings and is in line to start Sunday at home against the Mets.

2016
Rea was a major rotation piece for the Brewers over the past two seasons, but the organization elected to turn down his $5.5 million club option for 2025 after he posted a 4.29 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 135:43 K:BB over 167.2 innings. He served up 52 home runs in 58 outings across the last two years and also had a 4.82 FIP during that span. Rea cleared waivers prior to Milwaukee turning down the option, so there's limited interest league-wide even at a modest salary. The 34-year-old may not get consistent starts again in 2025, but he should be able to secure a contract this winter, even if it's a minor-league pact.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
League unimpressed by arsenal
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Rea likely went unclaimed on waivers due to his Stuff+ of 84, which ranked 55th of 58 qualified starters during the 2024 regular season.
Analysis
The right-hander delivered results just below league average the past two seasons for the Brewers with a 4.40 ERA across 292.1 innings, and the organization declined his $5 million club option for 2025 after he passed through waivers. Rea was Milwaukee's most reliable starter at times in 2024 but faded down the stretch, and his non-dominant arsenal leads to a limited ceiling.
