                2025 Fantasy Outlook

Holderman emerged as a high-leverage option out of the Pittsburgh bullpen in 2023, and he appeared to be taking another step forward through the first half of 2024. At the close of July, he had an impeccable 1.77 ERA, backed by a 28 percent strikeout rate. Things went sideways quickly from there, as he endured a four-game stretch during which he allowed seven earned runs across just 3.1 innings. Whether it was a phantom IL stint or a legitimate wrist injury, Holderman missed nearly all of August but managed to rebound across the campaign's final month. Zooming out, even at his best, Holderman doesn't own the prototypical strikeout stuff of a closer. However, his strong close to the 2024 campaign and proven ability to excel as a setup man could set Holderman up for save opportunities if David Bednar struggles early in 2025. Dispatched to Triple-A
The Pirates optioned Holderman to Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday.
                  Analysis
Holderman will end up as the odd man out of Pittsburgh's bullpen following Justin Lawrence's (elbow) return from the injured list. Holderman has taken a massive step back this year, posting a 7.01 ERA through 25.2 innings in the big leagues after logging a 3.16 ERA in 2024. Despite his performance, he remains a candidate to return to Pittsburgh if/when the Bucs need bullpen depth for their final stretch of games.

        2024 Fantasy Outlook

Holderman's surname was apropos as he recorded a team-leading 27 holds (T-8th in the majors) as the Pirates primary setup man. Armed with an upper-90's sinker, sweeper and cutter, the 28-year-old righty posted solid ratios that would have been even better if not for two poor outings to close out the season. Thumb discomfort may have been to blame for his rough finish, but Holderman's emergence last season was ultimately a boon to Pittsburgh's bullpen. His 24.2 percent strikeout rate was only slightly above league average and he didn't induce many whiffs or get batters to chase. This limits his overall upside, but his 52.8 percent ground ball rate was a top-30 statistic among relief pitchers. Holderman should continue serving as the Pirates' top setup man in 2024, making him a decent target in formats that reward holds.

The right-hander recorded 48 holds with a 3.52 ERA for the Pirates across the previous two seasons, but he was injured and ineffective in 2025. Holderman finished with a 7.01 ERA in 24 appearances, so the Pirates are likely to move on rather than pay his estimated $1.75 million salary for 2026.
