Known for his impeccable control, Martin turned in a career-best 1.7 percent walk rate that was also best in the league in 2024. Not bad for someone during their age-38 season and who was otherwise remarkable in a setup role for Boston. The right-hander's 26.1 K-BB percentage was T-13th among relievers, and he landed in a favorable situation with Texas on a one-year deal. The Rangers don't yet have a clear No. 1 option at closer, but Martin is still more likely to pitch in a setup role with a good chance to finish with 15-to-20 saves-plus-holds. Placed on IL
The Rangers placed Martin (undisclosed) on the 15-day injured list Friday.
                  Analysis
It's unclear if Martin's move to the IL is related to the right hand injury he suffered Sept. 14, but the Rangers should provide some clarity in the near future. Either way, he'll remain sidelined for the rest of 2025 and finish the season with a 2.98 ERA and 1.20 WHIP across 42.1 innings. With Cole Winn (undisclosed) also moving to the IL, Texas will promote Jose Corniell and Luis Curvelo from Triple-A to fill the open roster spots.

Martin's first season with the Red Sox was possibly the finest of his career. The 37-year-old led qualified relievers with a miniscule 1.05 ERA, while his 3.82 Win Probability Added was 5th and the highest mark for a non-closer. After posting the most strikeouts of his career in 2022, Martin's strikeout rate (23.1%) dropped by nearly 10 percentage points last year, but he continued to induce plenty of grounders (51%) and rarely issued a free pass. The right-hander's 4.0% walk rate was 2nd-best among relief pitchers, as Martin continues to be one of the premiere setup men in the league. Some ratio regression is expected in 2024, but Martin's overall consistency from year to year should yield plenty of holds and the occasional ancillary save for Boston.

                  Interest from Texas
The Rangers have interest in Martin, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
                  Analysis
It would be a reunion of sorts for the Rangers and Martin, who pitched for Texas in 2018 and part of 2019. The 38-year-old plans to retire after the 2025 season, so he'll presumably be seeking just a one-year contract this winter. Martin held a 3.45 ERA and 50:3 K:BB across 44.1 innings with the Red Sox in 2024.
